Austin City Limits 2011 – Day 2

In all honesty, I couldn’t wait to get back to ACL on day 2. Why? The headliner was Stevie Wonder and that alone was worth buying the ticket to ACL in my book!

We woke up and went to breakfast at a place that is known for having the best enchilada’s in Austin. They should be known for having the strongest margarita’s in the state. I think I got buzzed off one. Then it was back to music land for this little lady! We park and get on the bus to take us down to the park. I sit next to a guy from Tulsa. My Morning Jacket is his headliner this evening…. sorry MMJ fans – ya’ll are insane. Again, we don’t make it for the morning shows, my first show of the day is starting at 2pm.

Alison Krauss and Union Station. I’ve wanted to see these guys for a while and was it ever worth the wait and they played my favorite song!

Once AKUS was done performing, I had to figure out what to do with myself for an hour before Cee Lo came on stage and I was going to meet up with some friends (it’s almost like playing Where’s Waldo). I was so excited about bluegrass, I had to try to catch Gillian Welch’s show at a different stage. I head over, super pumped as I’ve heard nothing but great things about her live performances from friends. Her starting time rolls around and right on the dot someone comes on stage and says “Due to scheduling conflicts Gillian Welch will be starting 30 minutes late”. Well doesn’t that suck.

Next best thing, I caught the last couple minutes of Skrillex and I will honestly tell you I don’t remember their show at all (I’ve got Stevie on the brain).

Cee Lo comes on stage and entertains like crazy for an hour. ACL does a really good job with booking these acts a year in advance when suddenly, right around ACL time – you hear nothing but some of these artists! But still, I’ve only got one man on the brain and his name is Stevie.

Time Out. We need some food. We head to the “EATS” section. There was a lot of options for food but I was told that there was one item I absolutely, positively needed to try first… “The Chicken Avocado Cone”. Play the music please!

This is the Chicken Avocado Cone made by Hudson on the Bend.
The “Cone” is in a paper snow cone, then comes a flour tortilla. At the bottom of the cone is some coleslaw topped with fried chicken tender and fried avocado and topped with a sauce. The first bit – holy moly is it good. The batter on the chicken and avocado has just the right crisp and the seasoning is almost kind of tangy. It’s so good! Gotta get some!

It’s important to get the Chicken Avocado Cone as opposed to the Chicken Cone as the fried avocado it really a necessary key ingredient in this dish. Unless you are allergic to avocado’s, then I’ll give you a pass.

A friend of mine got the chopped beef nacho’s made by the Salt Lick. If you are familiar with the Salt Lick, you would know as soon as you hear the name it’s gonna be good. The meat was tender and melted in your mouth but when it’s used as a topping on nacho’s with white queso. Melt in your mouth goodness! I think we got our food fix!

The best part is that all the food at fairs and festivals are fat free! What? Didn’t you know?!

8pm rolls around and I’m ready for Stevie Wonder. The place is packed. We’ve been sitting in our “area” for a couple hours but now it’s getting ridiculous. Here is some concert etiquette. If you want to get a seat for a show, get there early like everyone else. If not, please do not push your way thru a crowd, walking on people, pushing people, moving people’s belongings and chairs or just coming up and standing directly in front of them. Also, please remember your “please”, “excuse me”. It’s polite and it’s amazing how many people forget their manners (I’m going to assume we’ve all been taught). Thank you – I’ll get off my soap box.

STEVIE WONDER!!!!! I could hardly contain myself. Ok so I was too far away to see him. At first, they definitely didn’t have the sound up loud enough, but they got it! Every song that he played was a hit. The crowd loved it! “Signed, Sealed, Delivered!” “Superstition” and he even sang some Michael Jackson. The man is a legend and to be able to see him perform is just an honor in itself. Incredible. I still have a hard time believing it. Singing and dancing all night! The man has skills!

You can probably get a small glimpse of how excited I was filming this video.

There were so many people at Stevie Wonder, I began to wonder how many people actually went to My Morning Jacket. I would love to see an aerial view of that if anyone has one, by the way.

I sang “Superstition” all the way out of the park, on the bus and to the car.  Even busting out moves along the way. Then I started humming it. I’m sure my friends loved it. (Sometimes I think I was born in the wrong decade.) What it must be like to be Stevie!

Good night ACL. We had one more day left and I really didn’t want it to be over but man, my legs were killing me.

Austin City Limits 2011 – The Beginning & Day 1

I’ve spent the last three days sitting in a folding chair so I only find it appropriate to write this blog doing the same. I’ve survived my first ACL. Did I know the full extent of the event that I was planning on attending? Nope. Do I wish I could do it all over again? You bet!

The ACL experience was wicked. It’s the only word I found myself saying over and over again. Maybe it’s because I’m from the Northeast. I guess I would be saying “epic” if I was from the west coast. The only thing that I wish I did was carry less, get there earlier and be the last person to leave. Sure I took a ton of pictures but they will be nothing like the memories I have. Being surrounded by thousands of other fans, all there for the music and just trying to relish, soak and absorb every single micro-second, you really can’t have it any other way.

Day 1: Big breakfast at Juan in a Million, check. Parking spot, check. Get the wristband that I’ll have on my wrist for the next three days, check. Take a bus down to the park, check. See the most damn bicycles I’ve ever seen in my life, well I guess I can check that off my list now too, check.

We swing on through security, check ourselves in and head in. ACL is massive. Eight stages, including one for the little tikes that people are brave enough to bring (I salute all of you parents that dare to bring them and introduce them to this beautiful thing). Art booths, food – damn delicious food), non-profit organizations, merch booths, and a whole lotta porta potties (THANK YOU!). Did I mention the bars? Yes, a few bars and water refilling stations.
It’s important to note that Austin is a lot like Burlington, VT. Keep the earth good and clean, recycle (if you fill a trash bag of cans you get a free t-shirt), bring your camelbaks, etc. I walk in and I don’t even know where to start. I just want to run around in circles like a kid who just walked into a candy store. It’s like I want to go to every stage at once, put every type of candy in my mouth at the same time, can’t do it. I gotta pick one. Who’s it gonna be?
I decide to head to the first stage for the first show the of day, first show of my first day at my first ACL. I was slightly pumped. Each artist is set to play about an hour set (except for headlines – two hours). Who is the lucky winner?
Brandi Carlile. Her voice, when she speaks kind of reminds me of Demi Moore. She comes on stage, ready to speak to the crowd and tell her story, sing her tunes and give us a couple treats. She is relaxed, unique, spiritful, soulful, energetic, belting out notes from the very bottom of her gut. She sang a new song, “Keep Your Heart Young”, “The Story” the song I’m sure everyone knows from Grey’s Anatomy. Her special gifts to all of us were a couple tunes, maybe you’re familiar with “Jackson” and “Folsom Prison” – Johnny Cash.  Her fiddler blew my mind.

In between sets, I start strolling. I fall upon Bobby Long. I only heard the last two songs of his set but this is the great thing about festivals. Maybe you’ve never heard of them but an artist can capture you in one song. I’m gonna be looking up this British invasion. So should you, if you haven’t already.

Ray LaMontagne – Now I feel like I’m two for two. He was amazing, even joined on stage by the Secret Sisters to sing Merle Haggards “Mama Tried (Clip of the video here.)”. Here comes this tall, bearded man wearing a white shirt with a black vest, black pants and straw hat, calm, cool and collected. Everyone who you wouldn’t be pictured as a fan was there, loving him, singing word for word in the front row. Natural, homey, with his scratchy voice belting out “Oh lord” in his lyrics. Melting. I’m gonna sit back in my chair and just pretend I’m there again. How damn relaxing.

Ray LaMontagne – Trouble
Flags, flags and more flags. One even said “Freak”. Then I found these cows! Maybe I’m not so far from those dairy farms in Vermont after all.
One set ends, I find myself wandering. Park of Zilker Park is on a hill. In my eyes, Zilker Park to Austin is the same as Central Park to New York. I walk over the crest of the hill to head on to another stage… holy $hit! I’ve found the holy land!
I find myself catching a few songs from Smith Westerns, Big Boi, North Mississippi Allstars, Bright Eyes (your trumpet player kicked some ass, good job). Loving it! Can’t get enough.
Foster The People. They’ve really hit it big the last couple months with their hit “Pumped Up Kicks”. Live, they rocked the set and the crowd. Energetic as ever.

What I do dislike about such festivals is when there are multiple artists playing at once that you want to check out. Case in point. Sara Bareilles vs Santigold.
Sara Bareilles – I love her. What’s not to love?! She is honest, fun loving and playful yet she will come out on stage and sing “Fuck You” by Cee Lo. (See a clip of it here or you can see a clip from ‘Many The Miles’, here.) (Please note, my video taping skills leave something to be desired so listen with your ears.)
Santigold. Honestly, I’ve never heard of Santigold until Day 1 of ACL. Friends wanted to check her out. Lordy, Lordy. She is out of control. Anyone who can go see one of her shows and not move to one beat of her entire set does not have a soul. Period. Their outfits on stage reminded me of “Coming to America” – yea the movie. Her music is a mix of reggae, r&b, rap. It’s a collaboration, I’m not even sure where to start to describe. It’s pretty awesome. Find a clip of her on YouTube, buy a ticket and go see her live. Well worth it.
The end of the night ended with headliners Coldplay and Kanye West, at the same time. Really? Yes. So first half of the end of the night – Coldplay. Huge crowd. Awesome set list (for the few songs we heard).
If you can stand the shakiness and just want to take a listen, here is Coldplay’s “Yellow”.
Kanye West. Honestly, I think there is a line between confident and cocky and I draw it when you start preaching, Mr. West. But you know what you are doing when you put on a show and the little 11 year old boy next to us who was dancing to every.single.beat. and doing some kart wheels loved you, so I’m going to suck it up and say well done.
Day 1: Complete.

Busy, Busy, Busy!

It has been quite the last few weeks! In Vermont for ten days, then Texas for less than two weeks, Vermont again for ten days, Dallas/Ft. Worth for three days then headed to Austin today after work for ACL! Phew! I’m kind of glad this is coming to an end but excited for this weekend.

This past trip to Vermont was for my little brother’s wedding. Sniff, Sniff. I’ve turned into a crier – I guess it’s karma for poking fun at my mom when I was younger for tearing up during those sad movies. It was a beautiful wedding, lots and lots of fun – quite possibly the best wedding I’ve been to!

The weather in Vermont was beautiful, well let me take that back. The first few days (on this second trip) it was raining but it was still nice considering Texas hasn’t really seen rain since April. The leaves are on the verge of turning which means leaf peepers will be there soon. Near the end of my time there the air was starting to get that fall chill. At night it got down to the low 40’s and into the 30’s! Burr! Grab your sweaters and put on some layers!

Now, I’m back in Texas where the threat of wild fires linger in the city outskirts and yesterday we beat the 1980 record of days over 100 degrees (we hit day 70). At least all this heat isn’t for nothing – we achieved a record. Right now I’m in between asking myself why I am in this state where the heat never seems to back off and how I’m going to survive ACL this weekend…good thing I just heard there’s a cold front moving in. High is only going to be 97 (only!).

If you don’t know, ACL is the Austin City Limits Festival which is an annual three day (outdoor) concert. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the festival with a pretty good list of headliners including Stevie Wonder! The man is a legend! I’m pretty pumped up about seeing Stevie Wonder. Other headliners include Coldplay, Kanye West, Arcade Fire and My Morning Jacket. I will definitely let everyone know how it goes!

Is anyone else going to ACL this weekend?
