Women’s Soccer: USA vs. New Zealand, Frisco, TX

I got into the Women’s World Cup this past year, rooting on USA. When Sy said he was surprising me for my Valentine’s Day gift, I never would have guessed the Women’s soccer game. Heck, I didn’t even know it was going on but he was right, it was a 12 out of 10 even with the cold temperatures.
Now that I think about it – this picture must look pretty ridiculous. Doesn’t it look beautiful outside? Clear, sunny sky, nice green soccer field. It was 34 degrees with a wind of 17mph. It was chilly. The wind was chilly. This Texas weather gets me every time. But here I was, mid-February (it is suppose to be cold in mid-February) at the Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas about to see my first professional soccer game!

Coach Pia! (below) See – she’s bundled!
Abby Wambach!
Here are the teams waiting to be announced (US on the left). These poor kids, I say poor – I’m sure adrenaline was rushing but they were waiting and waiting and waiting to walk them out. They are wearing shorts and it was freezing! I hope they didn’t get sick. Not that they care – they got to meet professional soccer players!
Close up of the starters.
Hope Solo.
Where’s Waldo? Seriously – do you see Waldo? I found him in the crowd!
Let’s get in some action shots.
Here’s a quick recap of the game. The score was 0-0 for the majority of the game until New Zealand scored in the 49th minute. Pizza Hut park had a sellout crowd who didn’t want to go home with a loss (well there were some New Zealand fans there but come on, we are in the US). At the 88th minute, Alex Morgan (assisted by Rapinoe) scores to even it up. Now they’re tied. At 93 minutes, Alex Morgan scores again (assisted by Wambach) to seal the game with a US victory!
Check out this video for the scoring goal. I somehow managed to get it on video.

The game not only brought a victory to the Women’s team but also broke a record for the highest attendance at Pizza Hut Park in eight years – 20,677 (sellout).
Complete game recap.
The game was so much fun to attend. I’m seriously going to have to keep an eye on their schedule. If you have a chance to catch a game, I would definitely recommend it.

Valentine’s Day Surprise

Well Sy has conjured up some kind of plan and it’s got me stumped. Although I really do love surprises, especially when they involve traveling to an unknown destination, his lack of “good” clues has left me guessing. So I figured I would just share with all of you and let you in on some of the fun.

Hints (Although, some of them I’m not entirely sure if it’s actually a clue or just throwing me off):

  • Date: February 11th (Saturday)
  • Outside event.
  • Will be gone from 11am to 7pm
  • It may take me an hour to get ready (to get ready to go to an unknown place).
  • Location: A place we have both been, but not together… so I’m guessing it is somewhere in East Texas. Maybe Henderson, Sulphur Springs area.
  • Location is closer to “a border” than we are now. (This is a great hint, it could be in any direction. Closer to Mexico, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Louisiana. Helpful.)
  • My shoes will not get dirty.
  • He was trying to get some kind of t-shirt to wear to this event that would be “the cherry on top” but he can’t find the shirt. The shirt would’ve also given away the surprise, apparently.
  • I believe this is a one time event / thing that we are attending.
  • I may need to paint my face or put on temporary tattoos. (This obviously isn’t going to happen. This is also the hint that I’m not so sure it’s true.)
  • People will be dressed up “all crazy”.
  • He needed to make a reservation.
  • I’m going to think this is a 12 on a scale of 1-10. (Even after all the hype.)

My guesses:

  • Not pig hunting (obviously out of the question if my shoes will not be getting dirty).
  • Not jumping out of a plane or off a bridge (because I said so).
  • Horseback riding?
  • A reenactment?
  • There’s a town called “Diana” in East Texas that I’ve wanted to check out for obvious reasons but you don’t really need to make a reservation for that (or paint your face among other hints).
  • Mardi Gras is coming up but …. I’m not so sure.
  • Bringing me to meet Mike Modano or Ron Washington (definitely above a 10 on the scale).

I find most ridiculous things to be down right interesting and awesome so there is really no telling what this could be. So if you feel like having a little fun, leave a comment with your guess or guesses. I’ll let you know what the surprise was on Monday!

NH Marine Memorial, Hampton Beach, NH

“Breathe soft, ye winds, Ye waves in silence rest.”

Located on Ocean Boulevard across the street from the Ashworth Hotel you will find a beautiful moment of the Lady of the Sea. The statue is beautiful so I just had to share some photos! She is standing guard of those who have been lost and looking out for those who are at sea.

The monument was completed and dedicated on May 30, 1950 – Memorial Day. It is in honor of all of those who have lost their lives at sea. That statue is appropriately made of NH granite and sits 12 feet high. The bench is 20 feet long holds the names of those lost at sea.

For more info and the story of how the statue got it’s place visit N.H. Marine Memorial.
