David’s BBQ

Well, it’s been a while since we checked out a new BBQ venture. Quite frankly, when is that ever a bad thing? Saturday we stopped by David’s BBQ in Pantego.

The history of BBQ in this family goes back all the way to 1910 when Elias Bryan opened a BBQ restaurant in Oak Cliff, Texas. Third generation David Bryan put his name on the BBQ list as well and hence David’s BBQ was opened in Pantego where it is still family owned. I hope I’m understanding the history right, either way – BBQ has a long history in this family and its still going strong.

Walking into David’s BBQ, you will immediately see many, many photos of those who have stopped by and checked out the BBQ. I think this is a pretty common practice in BBQ establishments… one notable on the wall was Mr. John Travolta himself. I wonder if I should submit a head shot so I can be on the wall?

Food – David’s is kind of set up in a cafeteria style. Get up to the counter, tell them what you’d like for meat. For me – chopped brisket as always. Sy – three meat platter. Next, grab a tray, they will hand you a plate with your meat of choice and off you go. Next up, pick your side(s) (coleslaw, potato salad, beans, okra, french fries, onion rings) and grab some BBQ sauce. Finally, grab a cup or drink, pay at the end of the counter, find a seat and dig in. That simple.

Here is my chopped brisket sandwich with some coleslaw and potato salad.
The sandwich was loaded with meat, so much meat that I lost about half of it as I was trying to eat so two buns probably wouldn’t have been a bad idea. The meat was also all just meat. I hate going out to BBQ and ordering a chopped brisket sandwich and finding fat in it. I’ve claimed these as a “Fat sandwich” and find them disgusting. This was not the case – all meat and it tasted great. Pretty much melted in your mouth but I wanted a little something extra so I went for the BBQ sauce. I had to use BBQ sauce out of a little bottle that didn’t go on so well but I mean, I’m not really going to complain. The bread was very fresh and soft that it felt like it wasn’t there. The potato salad was a little too mustard filled for my taste – all you could taste was mustard. This wasn’t my favorite. The coleslaw however was delicious. Made to perfection!

This is Sy’s plate. Ribs, sausage, brisket, coleslaw and beans, oh yea and a side of Texas toast.
He loved the ribs and sausage. Devoured them really. We had the same taste regarding the coleslaw. Perfection. Beans – we need to trust Sy’s opinion of the beans as I refuse to eat them. He liked them. Oh – I stole the Texas toast. It was a nice touch to the meal. When can you go wrong with some Texas toast?
Are you full? Well, I hope you left room for dessert. David’s has free vanilla soft serve ice cream which you can help yourself.
All in all it was a good lunch and the staff was very friendly. If you are in the neighborhood, stop by and let me know how you like it!

Storm Spotter Training

Over the weekend I checked out a free storm spotter training class. I’ve always loved thunderstorms and then I was introduced to the movie Twister and I think that made me cross the line. I find storms so interesting and the fact that a tornado can appear out of nowhere and have so much force is just amazing. And here, I find myself sitting southern portion of Tornado Alley.

Last year we had a pretty bad storm and I remember the sirens going off and following the Texans example, going outside to “see what’s out there”. My neighbor at the time said, “What do we do?”. Seriously – you are asking the girl from Vermont. At least I knew the answer. The storm itself doesn’t scare me as much as the hail that arrives before the storm. I will be honest, it’s not fun and I got nervous. The same storm, it started coming down hard, baseball sized and it felt like someone was beating the roof and windows were going to bust. It’s surreal. It seems like each spring for the past couple years I will get a call from a friend and he will tell me where the tornado’s are as I fail to watch the news until they seem to be close to my house. Then when they get too close, the TV stations go out and well you’re shit out of luck my friends.

About a month ago the news happened to be on (it was sign) and they said – free storm spotter class. I’M THERE! I arrived to the class in Denton on Saturday. I was excited, I even felt a little bit like a nerd and was ready to see what they were going to teach me. Little did I know when I walked in, I would feel like a fish out of water. What I saw, to me, were all experienced storm spotters, people with radio frequency numbers on name tags, trucks parked outside with huge antenna’s. Fact of the matter – this is a free class to the general public.

The class was really interesting and quite frankly really important. This was just a basic class, three hours in length held by the National Weather Service. They taught us how the storm comes about, how it stays strong and how to identify wall clouds and supercells. More importantly, how to identify if a tornado is in the works, what direction it is headed and the other symptoms that go along with such a mass and powerful storm. Videos were also provided showing events from last year to give us a sense of “real life”. At the end of the informational session, two meteorologists came in and discussed the radar that they use and is available online, it’s preventative measures and how they gather information on the storms.

Call me crazy for being so fascinated but in all seriousness it’s nothing to joke about. If I had it my way I would just want to see them in open fields and not destroying homes. The storms are dangerous as we have all seen. The most important factor to take from the class is how you can help folks become prepared and how to prepare yourself. Weather channels can only do so much and when these storms pop up they rely heavily on the general public to help locate the storms, know what they are doing, where they are going and pass the information along to help prepare others for their arrivals.

The National Weather Service hosts numerous classes in North Texas and I’m sure throughout the south annually. Check out the schedule for the remainder of the year, here if you are interested in attending a class. Highly recommended.

Presidents Day & Update

Happy President’s Day Ya’ll! I hope the majority of folks were able to take the day off and relax. I seem to have a hard time sitting still, even when I have a three day weekend. It’s like I’m always giving myself a new project or something to keep me occupied other than just sitting down and doing nothing.
Update: My camera is currently out of commission for what could be as short as seven days or as long as two weeks. With that being said, I’m taking this time to recap on some “adventues” that I’ve taken in the past. Although my posts are usually random and posted here and there, expect that even more in the upcoming seven days, up to two weeks. I’m kind of excited about this though because there are a lot of things that I would like to share!
AND since it is President’s Day afterall……
President George HW Bush Library in College Station, TX.
George W. Bush’s House in Dallas. Just prior to his moving in.
Saturday’s Trip: Mark Cuban’s house in Dallas. Ok, maybe he’s not officially the President or the Mayor but he might as well be!
