Upcoming Event

Hi Everyone! Sorry there hasn’t been that many updates lately, I’ve been pretty busy however I wanted to send out a reminder about a great event this weekend – The Texas Steak Cookoff!

On Saturday, you can head over to Hico, Texas and take part in this great event. There will be great food, awesome entertainment to make for a day of fun! Be sure to head over to TexasSteakCookoff.com to order your tickets for the cookoff, as they are predicted to sell out.

See the linked blog post for more information. We’ll be there and we hope to see you there too!

Haslet Wild West Fest

Over the weekend we went to check out the 2nd Annual Haslet Wild West Fest and Chili Cookoff. Needless to say, we’ll be back next year. Haslet is a small, growing community north of Ft. Worth, Texas. You are in the country yet far away from the city that you forget it’s there.

When we first arrived we saw cattle trucks. I was already excited. They had a small rodeo arena set up with a lot of bleachers ready for fans to view the day’s upcoming events. Over in the park there were small venues set up including Lee’s BBQ (my food critic says the turkey leg was delicious), Sweet Tea, Italian Ice, Craft booths, a bus for the blood drive and a festival wouldn’t be a festival in Texas without a mechanical bull. On the far end of the park sat the contestants for the Chili Cookoff.

This being only the second year of this festival, there were about 10 teams ready to go for the Chili Cookoff. Each person gets a sample of each tent’s Chili, then when you are ready, you can vote for the “People’s Choice” award. I’m just going to come right out and say it – I voted for Hippie’s Blend Chili. It was so good I’m thinking of showing up next year with a mason jar asking if I can take some to go. It was nice to walk around, talk to the chefs and see the different tastes in each chili. Some were more meaty, one had brisket and some were pretty watery. The thing I love best about Texas Chili is that it has no beans. Makes my choices a little easier – I’m not a bean fan.

Hippies Blend! Yummy!

The Rodeo Arena had events going on all day. First, we started off with high school rodeo. I had never seen high school kids partaking in bull riding so I figured, eh they are probably on smaller bulls. Wrong. They get right up there like the grown men. They did really well! Hopefully we’ll see some of them in a professional competition in a few years. Later on in the evening, the professional bull riding was to take place. We didn’t stay for the entire day so we happened to miss out on this. At least we got to see the high school kids ride the bulls.

Next up – Weiner Dog Races. We were looking forward to this but happened to miss the event.
Mutton Bustin! This I was excited about and apparently so wasn’t everyone else. For those who are not familiar with Mutton Bustin, parents sign up their children (under 50 lbs) to ride on the back of a sheep and hold on. It’s the children’s form of bull riding, with sheep. It’s really quite entertaining, and super cute.

My favorite future rodeo star!

If you are in the North Texas area in May, be sure to swing over and check out festival. It’s great for the entire family in this small Texas town. Great food, entertainment and I think all the ladies will agree there’s nothing like walking around and seeing real cowboys everywhere you turn. You really get to experience what Texas is all about!

Olenjacks’s Grille, Arlington, TX

Thru the grapevine, we heard of this place called Olenjack’s Grille. The only things we knew about the restaurant was that its won a few awards around the DFW area and they had a mean burger – we had to check it out.

We were pretty excited / hungry people when we pulled up the restaurant Saturday night. Granted, Kenny Chesney was playing for thousands of fans right now the street at the Cowboy’s Stadium, you wouldn’t know it as there wasn’t any traffic. We got out of the car, walked into the restaurant and man did it look nice. It seriously looked like we had walked into a high end, fine dining restaurant that a man would need to have a suit jacket on to get in. Granted – you don’t by any means. The place just makes you feel like you are one of those important people!

Olenjack’s atmosphere is superb, it’s really amazing. It’s not a huge restaurant but its not a place that you would consider a “burger joint”. Olenjack’s Grille is a fine dining restaurant that has made a name for itself using the freshest, local ingredients. Check out the menu for yourself! There’s no need for me to describe the food to you when your mouth will start watering just reading over the menu. Now, I would say some of the items are a little on the expensive side, however the food you are ordering, is a far cry from Wendy’s. What you are paying for is a damn good meal, the best / friendliest service and an absolute great time! (We ate at the bar, the bartenders were friendly and definitely provided great recommendations.) It’s well worth it.

Let’s get down to business… what did I say about a burger? That was the main reason we were there right?! Yes! The burger is called the Kitchen Sink Burger. Haha – you are thinking what I thought, “wth?”. Let me describe this bad boy – it’s a 1/2 pound hamburger, piled with ancho pulled pork and red onion strings, the perfect amount of cheese and you also get to choose a side. I selected to have roasted garlic mashed potatoes – creamy, delicious, savory and beyond filling. The burger, oh man. To be honest, I wasn’t sure about this but I’m all about trying out signature dishes these days so I had to and, well, my mouth is a little watery right now from just thinking about it. It was beyond delicious. I think it was the greatest burger I’ve ever eaten, in all seriousness. The pork- pork on a burger? The pork was so good on its own that it basically melted in your mouth and to have it in this mix, well its pure genius. You get a huge bite of cheese with every bite. The red onion rings is just the icing on the cake. They are thin, crispy and its like a little piece of heaven on a plate (or burger). And as a Heize ketchup lover, this burger needs no ketchup. That’s right, I said it, none. It’s that good! The only issue was – how am I going to be able to take a bite of this?… I managed!

If you are ever in the Arlington, Texas area whether its for a football / baseball game, concert, or just driving thru and you find yourself really craving something just down right delicious. Make sure you swing by Olenjack’s. (If you are on the way to a game, they do provide transportation if you want to grab a bite to eat, leave your car they’ll take care of you!) The food is fantastic, the service is superior and you will leave with full belly! Most importantly, you won’t be disappointed.
