Olenjacks’s Grille, Arlington, TX

Thru the grapevine, we heard of this place called Olenjack’s Grille. The only things we knew about the restaurant was that its won a few awards around the DFW area and they had a mean burger – we had to check it out.

We were pretty excited / hungry people when we pulled up the restaurant Saturday night. Granted, Kenny Chesney was playing for thousands of fans right now the street at the Cowboy’s Stadium, you wouldn’t know it as there wasn’t any traffic. We got out of the car, walked into the restaurant and man did it look nice. It seriously looked like we had walked into a high end, fine dining restaurant that a man would need to have a suit jacket on to get in. Granted – you don’t by any means. The place just makes you feel like you are one of those important people!

Olenjack’s atmosphere is superb, it’s really amazing. It’s not a huge restaurant but its not a place that you would consider a “burger joint”. Olenjack’s Grille is a fine dining restaurant that has made a name for itself using the freshest, local ingredients. Check out the menu for yourself! There’s no need for me to describe the food to you when your mouth will start watering just reading over the menu. Now, I would say some of the items are a little on the expensive side, however the food you are ordering, is a far cry from Wendy’s. What you are paying for is a damn good meal, the best / friendliest service and an absolute great time! (We ate at the bar, the bartenders were friendly and definitely provided great recommendations.) It’s well worth it.

Let’s get down to business… what did I say about a burger? That was the main reason we were there right?! Yes! The burger is called the Kitchen Sink Burger. Haha – you are thinking what I thought, “wth?”. Let me describe this bad boy – it’s a 1/2 pound hamburger, piled with ancho pulled pork and red onion strings, the perfect amount of cheese and you also get to choose a side. I selected to have roasted garlic mashed potatoes – creamy, delicious, savory and beyond filling. The burger, oh man. To be honest, I wasn’t sure about this but I’m all about trying out signature dishes these days so I had to and, well, my mouth is a little watery right now from just thinking about it. It was beyond delicious. I think it was the greatest burger I’ve ever eaten, in all seriousness. The pork- pork on a burger? The pork was so good on its own that it basically melted in your mouth and to have it in this mix, well its pure genius. You get a huge bite of cheese with every bite. The red onion rings is just the icing on the cake. They are thin, crispy and its like a little piece of heaven on a plate (or burger). And as a Heize ketchup lover, this burger needs no ketchup. That’s right, I said it, none. It’s that good! The only issue was – how am I going to be able to take a bite of this?… I managed!

If you are ever in the Arlington, Texas area whether its for a football / baseball game, concert, or just driving thru and you find yourself really craving something just down right delicious. Make sure you swing by Olenjack’s. (If you are on the way to a game, they do provide transportation if you want to grab a bite to eat, leave your car they’ll take care of you!) The food is fantastic, the service is superior and you will leave with full belly! Most importantly, you won’t be disappointed.

Twisted Root Burger Company

The weather is getting warmer and its time to get out the grill, unless you never put it away that is. However we all run into the nights where we don’t want to cook or just want something a little different. Let me introduce you to Twisted Root Burger Company. It’s a small restaurant known for their specialty burgers and original beverages. If the fact that they have locations popping up all around the DFW area isn’t an indication on how popular they are becoming then walking inside and seeing the steady stream of fans is.

My first time at Twisted Root – I wasn’t sure what to expect. One look at the menu and it was obvious that this wasn’t your normal burger barn. If you are into trying different burgers, different types of meat – this is the place for you! On the menu, you will find everything from your typical hamburger to buffalo burgers to game meats (venison, elk, ostrich) – you see, not your typical burgers! They also have specialty burgers such as Peppercorn Ranch and Bacon, Blue Cheese and Jalapeno and their Classic Swiss and Mushroom Burger, just to name a few. Now if you happen to be near a Twisted Root and want to try it out but aren’t necessarily in the mood for a burger – you are in luck. They also have hot dogs! Oh yes – 100% Black Angus beef hot dogs. This is what I went for – yea yea, go to a burger place and I get hot dogs. And yes – of course these also come in specialties like the burgers.

Now, if that doesn’t tickle your fancy, it just gets better – beverages. What’s so special about beverages, well for starters, they make their own drinks. You say what?! Yes, in addition to having the normal sodas, they also make their own root beer which you will find on tap along with a specialty root beer that they have conjured up. When I went it was amaretto root beer but I’ve heard they’ve had watermelon root beer and will come up with pretty much any flavor you can think of. They also have their own ice teas, lemonades, milkshakes, alcoholic milkshakes and alcoholic beverages. What’s better than a beer with a burger?!

So once you have finally made up your mind and paid for your food, you are handed a ticket that’s called when your meal is prepared. If the above was any indication, you shouldn’t be surprised when they hand you a ticket with a question on one side and a celebrity on the other. To make the experience a little more exciting, when your meal is done they’ll throw something out there like “Feeling a little blue” for LeAnn Rimes or ” Lucy, you got some ‘splainin’ to do!” for Ricky Ricardo. And to hear what they’re going to say for the other customers is pretty entertaining (and makes everyone pay attention) as well.

How was the food? … Delicious of course. If you haven’t been satisfied by their creativity in the kitchen then you will find another chance when you sit down at your table. The condiments. Horseradish Dijon, chipotle ketchup (a little kick to your normal ketchup) and BBQ sauce (we are in Texas after all).

And finally how can I forget – the atmosphere is so unique. The decor is something to be admired, especially if you are into the southern country decor. I’m not going to tell you much more about it other than you should find the nearest TRBC and make your way down there and check it out yourself. Enjoy!

Buc-ee’s, Madisonville, TX

If you ever find yourself driving down I-45 just north of Huntsville, you are not going to miss Buc-ee’s. There are signs at least an hour away, if not more, advertising their Beaver Nuggets, fudge, and their truck stop. So, we just had to stop to check this place out and see what was so great, right?

This truck stop turns out to be a very popular destination. First, there was a line to exit the interstate to stop at this locale. The first thing we noticed is the 30+ gas pumps out front followed by the packed parking lot (however not so packed that it was difficult to find a parking spot). Then we ventured inside…

Inside you will find a general convenience store. You will also find gift shop type items (everything Texan of course), cast iron pans, kitchen items, dishes, books, signs and A&M / UT items. You’ll also find seasonings for just about any dish you can think of, from grits to cornbread mixes and meat seasonings.

Beaver Nuggets, what the heck are Beaver Nuggets? Yea, I know what you are thinking. You’ve heard of Calf Fries, I can’t wait to see what this is but thankfully Beaver Nuggets is just pieces of beef jerky. (I can’t take another take on calf fries, I don’t quite understand it.) Buc-ee’s had a HUGE array of food. Pre-made sandwiches and wraps, or even made to order. They also have hot dogs, corn dogs, and chopped beef sandwiches (we’re in Texas after all). However, you should see their beef jerky counter. It’s got to be a good 20 feet of a display case. Desserts you ask? They touch on that too with cookies and even a fudge station. I wouldn’t believe it if you went in there and told me that you couldn’t find something that tickled your fancy in there.

Finally – the bathrooms. I have never been in a rest stop, or location that had bathrooms this nice. The bathroom is HUGE and each “stall” is its own personal room. That’s right, you get an entire door and its pretty much its own box. I was impressed. And as busy as it was in there, there were plenty of stalls open.

The only downfall to Buc-ee’s is how incredibly busy it was. I suppose we kind of asked for it stopping in mid-day on a Sunday. It should be kind of expected. However, if you can handle the absurd amount of people, I would suggest stopping to at least check this place out. It’s one heck of a truck stop.
