A Walk in the Park with Dr. Seuss in Abilene

In Abilene, Texas, next to the Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau you will find a land of magic, imagination and rhymes. Everman Park is the place of wonder and the beginning of the Storybook Sculpture Project which holds major characters from Dr. Seuss.

As the story goes, the mayor of Abilene enjoyed reading “Santa Calls” by William Joyce to a group of children every year. This was a particular favorite as the book took place in Abilene. One year, Mr. Joyce was invited to visit and an idea was born. The following year, the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature (NCCIL) was established and a sculpture with children from “Santa Calls” was created. As time moved on, another sculpture was created and children continued to ask for more characters.

The Children’s Art & Literacy Festival (C.A.L.F.) was created in 2012. This first event was a celebration honoring Dr. Seuss. Six sculptures came which now rest in Everman Park.

In 2013, Walter Wick was honored at the C.A.L.F.. His “Can You See What I See” books expanded the sculptures hidden in town. To keep the wonderment alive, his six sculptures can be found in throughout town (including the Abilene Zoo, The Grace Museum and the Public Library). The mystery is for children to find them using hints from the Seymour Passport.

Over the years, the sculptures have expanded throughout town to include characters such as Santa, The Easter Bunny and Sandman. Currently, there are a total of 14 sculptures throughout Abilene. It’s really something to drive around downtown Abilene and see random sculptures from our childhood favorites and imagination. They’ve come to life.

“Second star to the right and straight on ’til morning. ”

― J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan
Saturday morning, I woke up earlier than I would’ve liked to go get my oil changed. For some reason I brought my camera. Who brings a camera to get their oil changed?! Maybe it was a premonition. The plan was to go out to west Fort Worth, get my oil changed then come home and finish unpacking my new apartment and work on my horrendous, unending to-do list. If you know me, you will not be surprised that I ended up finding some back country roads and taking a lot of pictures. Surprise, surprise.

A couple years ago, I was given a book with weird, roadside stops in Texas. I keep it in my car because I don’t really plan things out (read above) and just end up going places. So while waiting for my oil change, I looked up what was nearby.

Stop #1 involved Peter Pan. I was in!
Peter Pan is one of my favorite cartoons / stories growing up. (Have you watched Finding Neverland? One of my favorites!) I find it pretty important to always be a kid at heart (hence you will see me busting out a move at inopportune moments to try to get people to relax – I don’t care if I look like an ass, it’s a good time)!

I had known about this little pit stop for a while but I’m glad I finally got to check it out!

If you ever find yourself near Weatherford, Texas, head on over to the library. It’s right off the highway and really easy to find. Outside, you will find the Peter Pan statue. The story of Peter Pan has nothing to do with Weatherford, however the actress that played Peter Pan did.
Mary Martin played Peter Pan in the Broadway production of Peter Pan until she was in her 50’s. She also earned a Tony Award for her role and was a Kennedy Center Honoree in 1989. The story goes, as a child she was obsessed with Buster Brown and she had her haircut in a short “pageboy bob” and refused to ever wear a bow. Funny how she ended up playing Peter Pan! If you want to realize how small the world really is, she is also Larry Hagman’s (from the TV show Dallas) mother.
In 1976, Ronald Thomason created this life-sized bronze statue of Martin in the signature Peter Pan pose. The status can be seen at the library along with some memorabilia inside (I wish I would’ve read that in the book before I left the library). In 1990, Mary Martin passed away and is now buried in Weatherford as well.

If you’re a fan of Peter Pan, swing on by. It just takes a minute. While I was there, two kids came running out of the library and couldn’t wait to get a picture with Peter Pan. It was pretty cute. We can all be big kids too folks! 🙂

“All the world is made of faith, and trust, and pixie dust.”

Check back in on Wednesday to see what else I came across on my Saturday travels!

Ree Drummond Book Signing, 2/14/2011, Dallas, TX

On Valentine’s Day I found myself sitting in (a very long) line waiting to meet Ree Drummond. She is the creator of PioneerWoman.com and an accomplished author. There are many reasons that it was a very long line. Have you checked out her website? If you haven’t, you definitely should.

Ree Drummond found herself dreaming of living in the city. She had spent some time in Southern California going to college. She went back home to Oklahoma for a short stint before planning to move to Chicago however her plans detoured when she met her future husband, Marlboro Man. (He’s a cowboy.) In 2006, she started her Pioneer Woman blog which is about an accidental country wife and mother for four children. She is an accomplished author (New York Times Best Seller), cook, and photographer. (She is pretty much living my dream life.)

I first came across The Pioneer Woman when I received her cookbook “The Pioneer Woman Cooks: Recipes from an Accidental Country Girl” as a Christmas gift. I was hooked. This is a recipe book which also showcases her photography and family on her Oklahoma ranch. This recipe book is a little different than the normal recipe book. Each recipe shows step by step photographs of the meal you are creating. This is especially helpful. The recipes are also fairly easy to make, they don’t require a ton of ingredients (don’t you hate those recipes where there’s 25 different ingredients listed? This isn’t it.), and they are darn tasty. Besides the fact that she lived on a ranch, was married to a cowboy and looked to have a pretty successful thing going on, I had to know more, so I looked up her website.

Her website is a compilation of her “Confession”, Cooking, Photography, Homeschooling and “Home and Garden”. Her “Confessions” page is stories of her life on the ranch. Her site also includes her photography (which is outstanding) and helpful tips to achieve the photography success you are looking for personally. Ree provides home and gardening tips, they did a home renovation a few years ago and she shares every step of that with you. She and her husband (did I mention that he is a cowboy and they live on a ranch) home school their four children. The homeschooling section (which is run by herself and another contributor) answers questions that people may have and show you the everyday life of being a home schooled kid. The cooking section of her site is her main focus as she loves to cook. This area provides some of her personal recipes and also brings you to a sister site called “Tasty Kitchen”. Here you have access to a ton of recipes which have been submitted by cooks from near and far. Her humor makes you feel as if she’s a friend that you’ve known forever. Her site is inviting and warm and is really a great learning experience. She also has three contributors on her site so you will always be getting an update in one area or another.

Her second book (which is the one that I attended the book signing for) is titled “The Pioneer Woman: Black Heels to Tractor Wheels“. This book is her story of how she and her cowboy husband ‘Marlboro Man’ met – you’ll fall in love with him by the end of chapter 2 – I guarantee it. She has humor and wit and doesn’t hold back when she shares some embarrassing stories (pretty much sounds like things that would happen to me). If you are into great love stories – pick this one up.

Ree Drummond has won numerous awards and is currently nominated for some of the world’s best blogs. She was also featured on “Throwdown with Bobby Flay“. At the book signing she said that she has been approached for starting a show on the Food Network however it sounds like she is more focused on her family and life on the ranch. They were also approached regarding putting out a movie about her book “The Pioneer Woman: Black Heels to Tractor Wheels” so who knows – they have three years to put it out there.

Her website has so much to offer, she appeals to so many people. Check out her site, go buy her book, you won’t be disappointed.
