“Second star to the right and straight on ’til morning. ”

― J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan
Saturday morning, I woke up earlier than I would’ve liked to go get my oil changed. For some reason I brought my camera. Who brings a camera to get their oil changed?! Maybe it was a premonition. The plan was to go out to west Fort Worth, get my oil changed then come home and finish unpacking my new apartment and work on my horrendous, unending to-do list. If you know me, you will not be surprised that I ended up finding some back country roads and taking a lot of pictures. Surprise, surprise.

A couple years ago, I was given a book with weird, roadside stops in Texas. I keep it in my car because I don’t really plan things out (read above) and just end up going places. So while waiting for my oil change, I looked up what was nearby.

Stop #1 involved Peter Pan. I was in!
Peter Pan is one of my favorite cartoons / stories growing up. (Have you watched Finding Neverland? One of my favorites!) I find it pretty important to always be a kid at heart (hence you will see me busting out a move at inopportune moments to try to get people to relax – I don’t care if I look like an ass, it’s a good time)!

I had known about this little pit stop for a while but I’m glad I finally got to check it out!

If you ever find yourself near Weatherford, Texas, head on over to the library. It’s right off the highway and really easy to find. Outside, you will find the Peter Pan statue. The story of Peter Pan has nothing to do with Weatherford, however the actress that played Peter Pan did.
Mary Martin played Peter Pan in the Broadway production of Peter Pan until she was in her 50’s. She also earned a Tony Award for her role and was a Kennedy Center Honoree in 1989. The story goes, as a child she was obsessed with Buster Brown and she had her haircut in a short “pageboy bob” and refused to ever wear a bow. Funny how she ended up playing Peter Pan! If you want to realize how small the world really is, she is also Larry Hagman’s (from the TV show Dallas) mother.
In 1976, Ronald Thomason created this life-sized bronze statue of Martin in the signature Peter Pan pose. The status can be seen at the library along with some memorabilia inside (I wish I would’ve read that in the book before I left the library). In 1990, Mary Martin passed away and is now buried in Weatherford as well.

If you’re a fan of Peter Pan, swing on by. It just takes a minute. While I was there, two kids came running out of the library and couldn’t wait to get a picture with Peter Pan. It was pretty cute. We can all be big kids too folks! 🙂

“All the world is made of faith, and trust, and pixie dust.”

Check back in on Wednesday to see what else I came across on my Saturday travels!

Grapevine, TX – Christmas Capitol of Texas

Have you heard of Grapevine, TX? It’s also known as the Christmas Capital of Texas and it’s definitely one of my favorite places to visit this time of the year. Within 40 days there will be more than 1,400 events. Millions of lights, decorations and even sightings of Santa make this a great place to visit alone, as a couple or even with your family.
Last week, I took a little trip to Grapevine and as usual, the Christmas spirit was all around. The Historic Main Street is absolutely AMAZING! The stores are so unique within itself but during Christmas, it’s really kicked up a notch. Each store takes part. In all honesty, it kind of reminds me of the towns in the Hallmark movies, stunning.
I even made a friend on Main Street!
From antique stores and unique shops, the Vetro glass blowing business to the Palace Arts Center and restaurants and wineries, there is something for everyone. On top of it all, if you are still looking for a unique gift, this is the place you’ll want to visit!
For the kids, be sure to visit the park. Honestly, I was so mezmerized by all the lights on Main Street but if you are with a child(ren) be sure to visit the park. There are different areas set up within a little winter village. It’s a great place to snap some photos of loved ones!
When it started to get a little darker, the lights really illuminated the area! At night its absolutely magical!
Grapevine, a little Christmas village in the heart of the Dallas / Fort Worth area. You really forget that you’re in the middle of the metroplex and feel like you’re in the middle of a Christmas wonderland. Now if only we could get a little snow.
Be sure to check out tomorrow for more on my adventures in Grapevine!

Alliance Airshow

There’s quite a few events going on in the DFW area this weekend. Oktoberfest in Southlake, Good Guys Car Show at Texas Motor Speedway (that I plan on attending this weekend), Pantego Fest, the Texas State Fair and the Alliance Airshow. That’s just to name a few – I’m sure there’s plenty more.
We had a chance to go to the Fort Worth Alliance Airshow a couple years ago. Personally, I love air shows (the crowd not so much) but the planes are fantastic to watch and check out! I love how some of them swoop down and almost touch the ground but just go whizzing by only a couple feet off the runway! Whoohoo! The best part is that it is FREE!

It’s also really nice to see the autographs for the kids! There were many pilots on site to talk to everyone about their planes. (Obviously, someone had to fly them there!)
This is a seat I’m good with never being in. It’s almost already sitting too high off the ground for me.
Sy and his Ft. Worth plane.
I’m good with never being on this one either. I think I’ll just stay on the ground.
You couldn’t pay me a million bucks….
You can tour the big ones!
“It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s a plane!”
You see everything! This guy flew right off the top of the camper!

Alliance Airport has a really nice Memorial walking in. Be sure to swing by and check it out. Many of the planes are military. It’s very honorable what these men and women do for our country everyday.
The event can get a bit crowded so if you’d like a spot where you can park a chair and get a good view, I’d suggest getting there early. After we left the airport, we also saw cars parked along the side of the highway so I guess that is always an option (if it’s legal?). The event was a lot of fun to go to so I would suggest checking it out, especially if you have little kids (or grown men who are like kids when it comes to this).
Have you ever been to an airshow? How’d you like it?
