Arlington 4th of July Parade

This time every year, Americans are excited for the 4th of July Celebration to celebrate America’s birthday. With it comes a day off from work, BBQ’s, camping, going to the lake and of course parades and fireworks.

When I first moved to Texas, I went from a very small Vermont town to a huge metropolis. I wanted to see what these parades would be like. First, I knew it was going to be HOT. July in Texas isn’t exactly the kind of weather you want to be stuck in. Neither is May, June or August actually, but I wanted to check it out none the less.

I was headed to the 4th of July Parade in Arlington, Texas.

This parade was much larger than any 4th of July parade that I had seen. Arlington has six high schools… much larger high schools than the one I went to. So that would make six marching bands. Many middle schools, many many elementary schools then add in the organizations and businesses that had floats. Thousands of spectators. The parade lasted a couple of hours. Get there early, bring a comfy chair, sunscreen and water. Words of advice right there!

These pictures were taken in 2009. The theme of the parade was National Monuments and Memorials.

Texas is pretty flat, so they made due.
This is Melissa Lawson and her family. She was the winner of Nashville Star.

I LOVE these old trucks.
For me, it’s not a parade without a tractor.
Everything is bigger in Texas, right? Or smaller. I guess it depends on how you look at this picture.
The Arlington 4th of July parade is your typical parade. Full of festivities for all ages and the kids love going to them. Even adults still love going to them!

Josh Weathers and the True Endeavors, Arlington, TX 2011-06-24

Another awesome show at the Levitt Pavilion with another new band, well new to me anyway.
Let me introduce you to The Josh Weathers and the True Endeavors.

Playing “Texas Rock and Soul”, they play mostly cover songs Friday night at the Levitt. At one point during the show, Josh sang “I Will Always Love You” by Dolly Parton and he blew everyone away. Man oh man can he sing. He captures your entire attention and you just can’t help but be mesmerized by his talent.

They played other covers ranging from the 60’s – 80’s, including “Papa Was A Rolling Stone” by the Temptations. One of my favorites.
Levitt was packed, as usual. However maybe I haven’t been to the “right” shows but by the end of the show there was actually a crowd up at the stage dancing and really lovin’ the music. It was the first show that I have been at that the band has really got the crowd up and moving and keeping them there all night. It was great to see.

I wasn’t able to get a picture of the drummer, but near the end of the show, he played at least a five minute (probably longer) solo. A bandmate have him sips of water in between, he didn’t miss a beat. It was insane!

Mr. Sax player – you are amazing. You are wicked. This guy can play the hell out that instrument.
Josh and the band came out and played an encore of two songs at the end of the show.
If the crowd had their way, I think they would’ve just played all night.
This group is so talented from vocals to instrumental, they have it down.
They play throughout the Texas region – be sure to check out their website and grab a show when you can!

Stephenville Dairy Festival

The first Dairy Festival I actually checked out in Texas was the Stephenville Dairy Festival. Stephenville is known as the Cowboy Capital of Texas, low and behold I was amazed when I actually learned they had dairy farms too! (My kind of place!)

Stephenville is a little over an hour south of Fort Worth, home to Tarleton State University. This is also where Ty Murray and Jewel call home. As with the Dairy Festival in Sulphur Springs, the Dairy Festivals here are small.

Getting there is half the fun. You get to enjoy the Texas Hill Country! My Favorite!

I would love land of my own!
I would love my own barn!
When we arrived, it was a smaller festival than expected. There were livestock, kids petting area, ice cream, and a covered area with crafts and booths. If I remember correctly, there was even live music!
 Strays….
It’s a dairy festival! Of course there was holsteins!
This guy was up for raffle. I wanted him. I have no idea where I would put him but I wanted him. Maybe someday on my ranch I’ll have a few.
The event was held at one of the local parks. Admission was free and is great for families.
