Winter Wonderland 2014

Vermont, Winter Wonderland, Vermont Christmas, Visit Vermont, Berkshire, Vermont

If you’re wondering why it’s been a little quiet around here, it’s because I took a little R&R. This past December, I headed back home to the great state of Vermont for some much needed family time and to soak in as much snow as possible. Each year, I begin to pray for snow around September on my forthcoming annual holiday trip. I’m not sure everyone back home feels the same way I do (definitely not my grandmother) but it’s what winter is all about! I was greeted in such delight. As beautiful as a postcard. No wait, it’s better than anything that could ever be captured on a postcard.

It almost doesn’t seem real to have grown up in such a beautiful place! One of the things that I love the most about being home (besides the beauty) is the relaxation. It’s astounding really. Letting go of everything that is hectic and just taking in what the world has to offer. Life slows down.

Then, as in most cases, I do what I do. I went for a drive…

Montgomery has to be one of my favorite little towns in Northern Vermont. Small town everything – ski shop, grocery store, B&B’s and the “Covered Bridge Capital” of the United States. Some would call it a ski town with Jay Peak right up the road. It’s also a prime area for the “Vermont” photographs we love so much.

Finally, the mountains. Do I love my Green Mountains. Jay Peak resort is a short drive from my parents home. It’s where all the “locals” learn how to ski and ride. The resort has changed quite a bit in the last few years but there’s one thing that remains the same, the beautiful, awe-inspiring view from the trails.

Don’t let these photos fool you. It’s was the crisp snow colored trees everyday right up until Christmas Eve. A few friends say I brought up warmer weather from Texas. I brought the rain.

I’m proud to say that I grew up in a place where everyone knows your name. Sometimes it seems like a hinderance – with word traveling fast but at the same time, it’s really nice. Franklin County is a community. It’s a place where if you need something, someone will be there to help or will know someone who can. Where you can go to the grocery store and see friendly faces instead of strangers. There’s a comfort in that. More importantly, it’s a place where some of my absolute favorite people are.

I’ve mentioned a few times that there’s a group of us that have grown-up together. We’ve literally known each other since we were five. When we get together, it’s as if we haven’t skipped a beat. We are family. While I was home, I met up with a friend who is married to someone I went to school with. She said “You do know the bond you all have isn’t normal right? Not everyone has that.” and I kind of laughed. She then followed it up with “It’s not normal but I love it. It’s incredible.”. That’s what sets this place apart from all others. We’re a pretty lucky (and funny) bunch.

Christmas came, family and friends gathered and shared laughs and as quickly as December 2014 came, the holiday festivities came to a close. It was time to come back to Texas. I even had a great sendoff with this view. As always… amazing.

I hope you all had a great Christmas and holiday season. It’s hard to believe that it’s 2015!

Stay tuned! I’ll have lots more to share about my trip including sights, events and some things that are very, very sweet!

10 Travel Ideas To Start The New Year

Travel Ideas to Start the Year, Travel Ideas, Travel Tips, Travel Goals, Adventure Ideas, Get Out of the House

It’s time to start fresh! It’s a new year and a perfect time to begin with a clean slate and spring up some great travel ideas for 2015! Traveling doesn’t equate to having to explore an area that’s great distances away – sometimes it mean exploring what’s in your area! It’s a great time to explore, prepare and anticipate what can happen this year. Here are a few ideas for this January!

1. Give Yourself a Goal. It’s time to plan for a “big” trip this year. Is there a place that’s been sitting on your bucket list that you’d love to scratch off? A friend that you haven’t seen in much too long? Where would you like to go and what do you need to get yourself there? Being a plan. (If you’re into going above and beyond this would be a great time to create a bucket list for 2015!)

2. Visit a Museum. Many are free. This would be a great afternoon trip!

3. Visit the Zoo. Sure it’s January and it’s a little chilly but bundle up and head out on a sunny afternoon and it’ll be a great day. (The Dallas Zoo currently has a $5 admission for January and February.)

4. Take a Drive. Sometimes it’s great to just get in the car and go. Drive with no location in mind and see where you end up or give yourself a destination to a place where you haven’t been before or in a while. Treat yourself to lunch. Don’t rush, just take it easy and relax.

5. Get Outside. There’s an endless amount of beautiful parks out there and it’s up to all of us to explore. Put on some comfortable shoes and go for a hike, grab your bike, rent a kayak and get out there and enjoy nature!

6. Attend a Brewery Tour. Ever meet those cold, grizzly days in January? What to do? Take a brew tour! Breweries are popping up everywhere, take advantage. Grab a few friends or go solo (there’s always friendly people at breweries) and go try out a few new brews!

7. Go for a Progressive Meal. These are the best! Can’t decide where to eat or do you have a list of new places to try? Why not try them all?! Start at one for appetizers, another for your main meal and a final for dessert!

8. Live Music. Find a local venue and go to a show. What’s great about live music is that it can be found anywhere and tickets can be free or at a low-cost. Try a new venue or visit your favorite and experience the sound of someone you’ve never heard before. (An extra tip – some radio stations have live shows which are free or have a small admission with multiple artists playing.)

9.  Attend an Event. It’s pretty amazing the amount of events that go on in the community. Take advantage! Find a chili cook-off, football playoff party or even attend the rodeo that’s coming to town. Be local – take part!

10. Go to a Game! Professional or local – it doesn’t matter. Go root for your favorite team or home team!

Holiday Light Hunting in Highland Park

Friday night, I ventured out to Dallas on a mission… to find the best possible Christmas lights around! The Highland Park area is a wealthy, peaceful neighborhood with elaborate homes just outside of downtown Dallas. (To give you an idea, we drove by a house that had valet for their party.) Driving around looking at these amazing homes is a trip in itself but to have them decorated so beautifully around the holidays is the icing on the cake!

If you happen to be around the Dallas area and are looking for a good spot for lights, this is definitely it. There’s also carriage rides available to take you on a tour down a few streets.

Here are a few of my favorites! I hope you enjoy them too!
(Be sure you scroll all the way to the bottom to see the jackpot of all decorated homes!)

I would love to have life-like guards outside my door but I guarantee if I’m storing them in an attic, they’re bound to catch me off guard at another point during the year.

Does anyone else think Home Alone when seeing homes like this one?

Is your house too big? Well, let’s just decorate all the trees! Christmas Lights, Dallas Christmas Lights, DFW Holiday Lights, Holiday Lights, Texas Holiday Lights Christmas Lights, Dallas Christmas Lights, DFW Holiday Lights, Holiday Lights, Texas Holiday Lights

This was my favorite (above). Perfect in every way! Not too big, not too small. Great porch. Feels like home!

No joke. That Nutcracker is literally the entire first story. The presents are bigger than I am and there’s even more on the lawn that I couldn’t get into the picture.

Which one is your favorite?
