Texas Travels: Springtown & Peaster

Springtown, Downtown Main Street, Texas

Texas. Small towns. Roads that seem to go on forever and in the blink of an eye a town could pass by. A couple weekends ago, I went for a little drive with no particular destination in mind, I only had an itch to be on the road. It didn’t matter what I saw or came across, only that I was out there. What better way to begin the year?

I drove to Fort Worth and then decided to drive up Jacksboro Highway 199 to Springtown. I’ve never been there. In case you are wondering, there’s not much around. A town square with businesses (see above), a park and a BBQ restaurant. The BBQ restaurant was the busiest.

I decided to head out of town. I knew Weatherford was not too far away but far enough to continue the afternoon drive so off I went. Beginning to think that this was a road to nowhere, I was completely thrown off guard when I came over a small hill and corner to see a rolling plain. This was Texas.

I started to think about my exact location. It dawned on me that I have a friend who grew up in Peaster which was nearby. Having heard a ton of his hilarious stories from growing up in small town Texas, I though “What the heck?!”. I detoured to Peaster.

Peaster Texas, Community Building, Stone Building

There wasn’t much in this tiny town. The elementary and high schools are the largest buildings in town. The post office is the size of a standard room. It’s quiet. I’m sure everyone was wondering who this stranger in town was driving around and taking few pictures. It’s a Texas town.

Sometimes, we travel down roads with no particular destination in mind. Like life, what comes, comes. We can experience something new if we have our eyes open or completely miss opportunities if we keep them closed, even if it down a two lane road.

Here’s to starting off the new year. May we all experience something new, hopefully keeping our eyes open and hands steady. There’s a lot out there to see!

Tractor Parade of Lights

One of the first items on the agenda when visiting Vermont around Christmas was the Tractor Parade of Lights. Yes – tractors! I’m from a county in Northern Vermont where dairy farming is prominent. Tractors, cows and the smell of fresh manure are common. Each June, we have a June Dairy Day Festival to honor the hard-working farmers. This holiday season, the farmers helped everyone to celebrate with a parade of lights.

The first annual event was held on Main Street in St. Albans followed by festivities at the Co-op including visits with Santa, a couple of elves and even a cow (costumed), which was my nieces favorite part. Before the event, I brought my older niece to the store to pick out some canned goods to donate to the food shelf, as suggested. This is a great event for families and to show children at a young age what it means to give back.

As for the tractors and lights, I’ll let the pictures tell the story. It was pretty hectic so not all the photos came out perfect from where we were but it gives a peek into next years festivities!

Odd Roadside Sights… Texas FM 290

Imagine driving down Farm Road 290 between Peaster and Weatherford, Texas. A two lane road  surrounded by fences, open fields, the occasional home or two and every so often if you pay attention, you’ll pass thru a tiny town. Then up ahead you see a little pull off area.

Would you ever guess there would be a truck ready to sell oysters, shrimp and alligator meat over 300 miles from the closest coast?
Neither did I….

Guess he’s been here for years although my friend from this area said he’s never stopped.
Makes you wonder!
