Dallas Derby Devils Roller Derby, 2012-06

When my parents come to visit us, we try to bring them to something they’ve never been to or something they wouldn’t typically get to see back in Vermont. This year we brought them to a bout of roller derby with the Dallas Derby Devils. This wasn’t Sy and I’s first derby, (ok so maybe it was only our second) but we enjoyed the first one so we thought this would be a good event to bring them to.
Location: Nytex Sports Center, North Richland Hills, TX
Price: Tickets were $13.00 (This was with a $2.00 coupon so check out their website for deals) and it was for two bouts.
The Track: The girls skate on quads on a flat track. For those of you that have seen the movie Whip It, it’s a little different but same concept.
Venue Info: It’s quite a popular event so be sure to get there a little early. There’s dollar drafts and jello shots and the derby girls are all over so if you’re looking for a picture, you will get one! It can get a little warm in there but you can always swing over to the ice rink on the other side of the building where there’s ice hockey to cool off a little bit.
If you think this is for you – be sure to check out the Dallas Derby Devil’s website for their schedule. It looks like it’s once a month during the summer. If sitting in the stands just isn’t enough for you – you can always try out (keep an eye on their website for announcements). If you’re a guy – I hear there’s a men’s league too so you’re in luck! It’s a good time if you’ve never been to one! Be sure to check out a bout! It’s lots of FUN!

Rangers vs. Twins 2012-07-08

Last night I went to the Texas Rangers vs the Minnesota Twins baseball game. The game was going well, we had good seats (second deck, second row on 1st base line). Pretty soon the winds start to pick up, garbage started flying, the temperature drops down to 79 degrees and the announcer comes on saying that everyone on the third deck can move to the lower decks if they would like (because of the winds). I’m going to say this was more of an advisory than a suggestion. Soon enough we see a strike of lightening behind left field, outside the stadium. No big deal. Then IT came. The loudest thunder I may have ever heard with a lightening strike hitting the same time. Everyone jumped. The little boy across the aisle from us called it quits and started up the stairs crying his eyes out (poor little guy). It was crazy! Seriously, I thought the place was going to start crumbling into pieces. It didn’t even occur to me what the players were doing until I got a call from Sy asking if we were alright. When I got home, I got to see the video of the players reactions. My favorite – 1st base coach.
You can check out the video from ESPN, here. Keep in mind, it was SO much louder than the video.
Here is also the article on Yahoo today with some quotes from the players.
About five minutes after the scare of our lives, it down poured for 10 minutes then the game continued on. It continued on for 13 innings until the Rangers finally pulled it together and won it for all of their fans!
 I love this stadium!
I guess we can tell who the rookies are!
This little guy was 5 years old. Not only did he get to go out into the field, he met with the captains, umpires and even had a little talk with Mr. Napoli!
Rolling up the tarp to get the game back on – for the fans who didn’t run out of the stadium.
Dana, this one’s for you…
My man – Ron Washington – doing his thing! I go to the games to watch this guy – seriously, he is my favorite! Now, I just need to get his jersey!
Thank you Kinsler for FINALLY ending the game!
13 innings on a Sunday night, it wouldn’t be so bad if we didn’t have to go to work in the morning!
Go Rangers!

Beale Street

Obviously, I’ve been in a writing slump. Then I was looking thru pictures and completely forgot to share this with you. A huge attraction in Memphis is Beale Street. I really had no idea what I was missing…
Beale Street is just a party street. The ends of the street are blocked off and watched over by the fine Memphis Police Department. There’s musicians, performers but mostly just people walking around drinking and having a good time. It originally started up in the 1920’s with nightclubs, theatres, shops along with drinking and gambling. Obviously, it has carried on thru to today. The street is still packed.
She’s waiting for customers!
I was amazed at how many historical landmark signs we saw just down this area of what felt like three blocks, although now that I think back about it I really shouldn’t be. The musical history down this street alone is impressive. Elvis was influenced here, BB King made his mark here and artists are still beginning their claim to fame in this area.
Someone was loving this sign.
Now, Beale Street isn’t the only stop in the area. Really, there’s quite a lot to see and all within walking distance of each other. I wish we could’ve had a chance to check a few of these out. Maybe next time…
Sun Studios – Known as the birthplace of Rock and Roll. It’s recorded numerous artists, perhaps you’ve heard of a few guys named Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash? You can still go in and record. How cool is that?
This is just a “Kooky” sign we saw. Sy loved it.
Home of the Memphis Grizzlies.
Sy showing his Dallas Mavs pride.
I was more interested in what was diagonally across the street – Gibson Guitars! I would’ve loved to go on a factory tour!
Memphis wouldn’t be Memphis without the Rock and Soul Museum in the area.
The street was lined with these different sports balls along the street. I had to include them. They were fun!
Autozone Park is nearby as well located right in the middle of the city area (at least it felt like it) and diagonally across the street from the Peabody. Checkout the local minor league baseball team – it looked like a nice place to see a game.
Memphis, if only we could have had a little more time to spend together!
