Josh Weathers and the True Endeavors, Arlington, TX 2011-06-24

Another awesome show at the Levitt Pavilion with another new band, well new to me anyway.
Let me introduce you to The Josh Weathers and the True Endeavors.

Playing “Texas Rock and Soul”, they play mostly cover songs Friday night at the Levitt. At one point during the show, Josh sang “I Will Always Love You” by Dolly Parton and he blew everyone away. Man oh man can he sing. He captures your entire attention and you just can’t help but be mesmerized by his talent.

They played other covers ranging from the 60’s – 80’s, including “Papa Was A Rolling Stone” by the Temptations. One of my favorites.
Levitt was packed, as usual. However maybe I haven’t been to the “right” shows but by the end of the show there was actually a crowd up at the stage dancing and really lovin’ the music. It was the first show that I have been at that the band has really got the crowd up and moving and keeping them there all night. It was great to see.

I wasn’t able to get a picture of the drummer, but near the end of the show, he played at least a five minute (probably longer) solo. A bandmate have him sips of water in between, he didn’t miss a beat. It was insane!

Mr. Sax player – you are amazing. You are wicked. This guy can play the hell out that instrument.
Josh and the band came out and played an encore of two songs at the end of the show.
If the crowd had their way, I think they would’ve just played all night.
This group is so talented from vocals to instrumental, they have it down.
They play throughout the Texas region – be sure to check out their website and grab a show when you can!

Turnpike Troubadours, Arlington, TX 2011-06-11

Another Saturday, another show at Levitt Pavilion on Arlington, TX and it couldn’t have been a better night. Low and behold, this band was referred by a couple friends and they are now my new favorite band. I love it when you randomly come across a new act that just blows you away. For me it’s one thing just hearing a good song on the radio but seeing a group perform on stage is really where it’s at.

We grabbed a few chairs, a cooler of nice cold drinks and met some friends out at the Levitt. The place was pretty well packed. At 8pm, Turnpike Troubadours came out on stage and it couldn’t have been more perfect for me. This is the music that I love listening to at outdoor shows. If you mix in some Southern Soul, Bluegrass, Country and some Americana roots music, you’ll get the Turnpike Troubadours. They put on a great show, coming on stage around 8pm and playing until 10-10:30pm.

Give ’em a listen…

Something else that made me just as happy is this man…

I remember seeing him last fall at the music series at the Levitt. He brings his lasso out and teaches the kids how to lasso as well. It’s like as soon as he’s there the kids just come running, they all want to learn. Heck, I wanted to learn and Sy said “it’s just for the kids.” … I like to think he would’ve shown me, maybe next time. haha. I think I could just sit and watch him ring that lasso around for hours. Just one more thing I love about the South. It’s simple, it’s graceful, it’s the heritage and part of the way of life.

The Devil Went Where?!

…He went to Georgia?!

The Devil Went Down to Georgia has to be one of the most well recognized songs. I would look at you like you were nuts if you’ve never heard it. Charlie Daniels, one of the most recognizable musicians who has been around for over 50 years and he plays music like he’s just getting started.

We had the opportunity to see Mr. Daniels and his band play at the Levitt Pavilion in Arlington, Texas as part of a fundraiser for the organization. Twice a year, the Levitt hosts a month long concert series Thursday – Sunday evenings, under the stars of Texas. Bring a chair, blanket, drink and snacks and just enjoy listening to fantastic musicians outside.. This concert series was a fundraising event to assist in keeping this phenomenal program alive.

We were pretty excited to see Charlie Daniels. “Pretty excited” is probably an understatement. “Trudy” is our absolute favorite, as well as a few others. He is a legend and to witness it in person, is history in my opinion. There is nothing like seeing a musician live.

He played a few of his greatest hits.
He played a few acoustic only pieces with his magnificent band. The drummer really didn’t hold back.
He was insane, playing a drum solo for a good five minutes!
He played a gospel tune, the Pledge of Allegiance and
provided great support for the troops.
He was beyond phenomenal. I would highly recommend seeing him.
He doesn’t miss a beat and his dedication to this country and music is enormous!
He ended the night with a classic…. The Devil Went Down to Georgia!
