WW: Tornado’s and Reflection

Usually, for Wordless Wednesday’s I show a few pictures from one of my recent travels. For this Wordless Wednesday, I thought it would be a good time for some reflection.

I’m sure we’ve all seen the devastation from the Oklahoma tornado’s by now. My heart aches every time I think about it – the families, friends, children, animals and memories that these folks will never forget. I also think about the devotion of those who have swooped in to help with recovery efforts and what they see through their eyes.

Then I think about the things I am thankful for – my family and friends, having a roof over my head, my life, my health, running and clean water. Material things are just material things. It’s the way a community / country comes together that is fascinating.

In honor of Wordless Wednesday, I encourage every one of us to look around and really take a good look at what we are thankful for and our everyday blessings. It’s sad that sometimes it takes a disaster for some of us to realize this but going forward, I hope we make every effort to count our blessings everyday and how quickly it can be taken away. I know I try.

Or in this case supporting fellow, future Alumni.

Even though I now live 2,000 miles from home which is around the same distance to where I attended college, I still check out the news back home in Vermont. This morning, there was an article that caught my eye.

Four Champlain College seniors, who are going by “The Blue Eyed Grizzly Clan” are planning on taking part in the Mongol Rally. What is the Mongol Rally? Well honestly, I never heard of it until now either. The Mongol Rally begins in London this July. The “Adventurists” (you’ll see why I’m calling them that in a second) will travel 10,000 miles to Mongolia. Along the way, they will travel the most rugged terrain, mountains, deserts, you name it they will probably hit it. These Adventurists basically need a car and can take any route they desire to get to their final destination.

But there’s a twist…

The Mongol Rally asks that each team participating donate money to charity (about $1,600 US). Pretty awesome, right? The Mongol Rally asks that half raised be donated to Cool Earth and the other half to a donation of your choice which the group has chosen as Safe Passage.

Although, this all sounds pretty like a pretty incredible adventure to embark on before entering “the real world”, it doesn’t come cheap. There’s a flight, charity donations, VISA’s, buying a car, ensuring said car, registering the car in the countries they plan to drive through, not to mention everyday essentials such as food and gas. The Blue Eyed Grizzly Clan has set up a site for donations on the below site. If you would like to support their efforts or learn more about these four guys and follow their adventure – please check out the link below.

Good luck guys!

It’s December 1st Ya’ll!

Christmas has to be my favorite time of the year! It’s a time to spend with family and friends. Neighborhoods, communities and businesses are all decorated with lights and there are always a ton of festivities going on. This month, I would like to share some things that I’ve done in the past and some places that I have traveled to during the holiday season.
First, what better way to start off than decorating your home! I couldn’t wait. I got my tree last Sunday!
Yes, it is a real one. Although, I would actually prefer cutting it down myself, I do not have that luxury at the moment but I was able to get a real tree in good ole Texas!
Now that I look at it, she is a little crooked!
The nativity scene was my Memere’s. She had purchased it a few years ago (I think in the 50’s). I remember playing with when I was a child. Brings back some good memories.
I’ve got some pretty good ornaments on here.
The cow! It’s a must for this Vermont gal. Same with the John Deere milk jug.
In the bottom corner we have a Canadiens ball – love some hockey!
The Longhorns football – represent Texas!
Snowmen, snowflakes – It is Christmas time folks!
The mantle. The stockings I made myself a couple years ago. They turned out a bit bigger than planned. Let’s just say when they have items in them, they no longer hang – more or less “sit” on the mantle.
SANTA!
This is actually a flag that you are suppose to stick on a pole outside. It belonged to my Pepere before he passed away. It’s very special to me.
My DIY project. I had bought the garland and added some lights, berries and pine cones (which smell fantastic). It’s a great way to brighten up the entrance.
Finally, this is my card rack. As you can see – no cards! I’ll be waiting for yours in the mail!
Happy Holidays!
