Oktoberfest, Southlake, TX

This past weekend seemed like a blur, there was so much going on and lots that I need to fill you in on, however let’s start with Oktoberfest! On Saturday, we checked out the Oktoberfest in Southlake, Texas. It almost seems like each year there is a new Oktoberfest popping up in either your own town or a town close by, here there have been at least three or four of them in the past two weeks, so we had to at least check out one of them!
The Oktoberfest in Southlake is held in the Town Square. It is actually a pretty nice area with a gazebo, small park which is surrounded by a shopping center (outdoor shops) which holds numerous restaurants. Obviously, there is a ton to do to begin with, throw in some tents in the middle of the Square and you have a party. Top it all off, the event was free to the public.
The gazebo hosted a series of entertainers. There was even a nice patch of grass in front if you wanted to bring some chairs and just hang out. A beer tent was conveniently placed nearby.
Southlake seems to show a huge emphasis on family based events, this one included. There is a section of kids games and bounce houses for entertainment. Even a rock climbing wall for the older kids, or adults young at heart. There was even a martial arts instructor teaching children how to break a board with their hands. It’s all about respect and confidence. He seemed like a great instructor and was great with kids. (I have no idea what company / organization he worked with but if I had a child, I would enroll them.) It was probably one of the biggest highlights of my day.
The center of the park was full of vendors and craft tents.
Look at these cute little guys! I love pretty much anything that has to do with fall. I could’ve bought and made a village!
I love this truck! If only I could drive around in this beast!
Food and brews?
Getting there… the event itself was free, however if you wanted any food or beer, tickets would need to be purchased. I believe tickets were $0.50 each and the amount of tickets depended on the item purchased. Numerous vendors were these selling their delicious treats (even soft serve ice cream there on the end).
Beer tents were scattered throughout the area.
This is a good family event, even to get out of the house for a couple hours on a nice day. It appeared to be more family oriented than food/beer driven. You may even see a celebrity or professional athlete as Southlake is the home to many of them. Sy is convinced he saw Jon Kitna, Tony Romo’s back-up. By the time he figured out why he looked so familiar he was walking off with his family. None the less, the man was pretty happy.
If anyone else attended Southlake’s Oktoberfest, what’d you think?!

Views and Brews

A month from now I will be back home in Vermont, filling up on all the necessities that I have been missing – fresh air, hearing cows moo-ing when I wake up, dirt roads, creemees, microbrews, mama’s cookin’, four wheeling, canoeing, hiking and just gazing at the mountains. I think the mountains and breweries are what I miss the most, besides my grandmother.

Last week, one of my co-workers just got back from his vacation in his home state of Massachusetts. He brought me back an edition of the Yankee Brew News. Apparently, I have been living under a rock since I’ve never heard of this paper… I’ve been missing out.

The first article I see immediately grabs my attention “Beer and Hiking”. Well that sounds pretty darn right to me. Views and Brews, created by Tom Rankin, reaches out to others like me who love hiking and beer. The main objective is to visit breweries and hike (at least a mile) one of the mountains / trails nearby. If you complete x amount (as listed on the site), you become eligible to receive a patch. There are different patches for each state (NY, VT, RI, NH, CT, NJ, WV, MA, ME, DE, PA) and even Quebec. This really gives you something to aim for, see the views from a few different peaks and try out a few different brews.

So what are you waiting for? Get out there!

Mom & Dad Take Another Trip To Texas!

Over Memorial Day weekend, my parents came to visit me in the large state of Texas from the tiny state of Vermont. My mom got on a plane for the second time in her life, both times to see her “little girl”. She even told me that she wouldn’t do it unless it was to come see me. 🙂

Well, the first time my parents came to visit, I filled every second with things to do because I wanted them to experience everything that there is in this area. Needless to say, it was a little overwhelming. So this trip, I didn’t plan a thing, other than an old car show for my dad and thinking of a few places to eat. Once you experience Texas BBQ, there is no turning back.

We drove around checking out the large houses in Colleyville, Southlake and Westlake where celebrities, professional athletes and business owners live in their huge homes.

We also got to see some great Longhorns!

We swung by Cabela’s. Shopping in the store itself is a lot more fun than shopping via catalog.

Check out this pair of briefs – you can wear them for 6 weeks in a row!

How could someone stop in Texas without swinging by the spaceship, aka Jerry World, aka Cowboy Stadium.
We also had a good go around on some go-karts. I don’t know about you but when we were little we would go to Old Orchard Beach every year for vacation. We’d go play mini golf and hit up the go-karts at least once. It really feels so long ago. If it’s been a while since you’ve treated yourself to a little go-kart action, it’s time you revisit. Man oh man was it ever a blast. I wish I had some pictures! Dad had his cart completely stuck (t-boned) against the side of the track and had to get pushed out (he was getting a little reckless). At the very end, I came whipping by Sy, only to have my mom beat me at the very end! She was pretty escatic.

We also went to the Omni Theatre in Ft. Worth to see ‘Tornado Alley’. The Omni seats are very steep and the dome above provides a full, 3D affect – it’s as if you are right there in the middle of whatever you are seeing. At the beginning of the shows, there is a helicopter flyover of Ft. Worth. It’s pretty intense and made my mom pretty nervous. She grabbed ahold of my dad’s arm, for a second you thought you were going to fall out of your seat. It was hysterical.

Some other locations which we checked out which I’ll post about later are: Founders Plaza, Classic Chevy Convention, downtown Fort Worth and the Fort Worth Stockyards.

With all this running around we were bound to get hungry.
BBQ Fix – North Main BBQ
Mexican Fix – Chuys
Mom and I worked on my garden that I’ve started out on the patio. Now I feels like it’s really grown, even though the only new item we planted is cilantro. I can’t wait until some items start to grow. It’s really exciting!
It’s really nice to see family, especially since they live 2,000 miles away. It’s especially hard to see them go but in August I will see them again. Considering it’s already June 2nd – I’m sure August will be here before we know it!
Did anyone have any out of town visitors over the holiday weekend or check out anything new and exciting?!
