Lone Star Classic Chevy Convention, Irving, TX 2011-05-28
When my parents told me they were coming to visit me in Texas, my dad made sure to tell me that I also had a mission – find an old car show. He is a huge antique enthusiast, so it’s really no wonder. Thank goodness I found one, I haven’t had a lot of luck in the past finding these around here.
The Lone Star Classic Chevy Convention presided over Memorial Day in Irving, Texas at the Sheraton Hotel. This convention features cars from 1955-1957 from across the country. The mid-50’s provided cheap, available and great looking cars. Nowadays, Chevy’s are built and restored to compete at these conventions which can bring more restoration value to their vehicles.
The Lone Star Chevy Convention originally began to provide local Texas enthusiasts with an annual event that would be held by a “local chapter” in the early ’80’s. Obviously, it’s become successful. Check out some of these rides.
The Conventions included a drag race, peel out contest, Show and Shine judging, Candi Clark from ‘American Graffiti’ and live entertainment from a local radio station (providing prizes). We happened to be walking by their table when they asked a multiple choice question, one of the answers being ‘Vermont’. If any of us knew the answer, it would be dad. He quickly yelled out ‘Vermont’ (really who else was going to yell it out) and sure enough he was right! Must have been meant to be!
Antique Alley, Texas
Every year in April and September, rain or shine, you can travel along Farm Road 4 between Maypearl, Grandview and Cleburne you can expect nothing but sales. That’s right – its a 25 mile stretch full of steals and deals!
If you love pondering through items, what some may consider junk you consider gold, this is going to be the trip for you. This area is full of Texans who have been living in this area for generations, including many farmers and ranchers. Coming across some great antiques would not be a surprise so be sure to get out there bright and early!
I would suggest starting off in either Cleburne or Maypearl and head towards the other. Last year we decided to give this much talked about event a try. Half the fun is checking out the scenery along Farm Road 4 – its gorgeous! (Be sure to bring your camera!) You will want to park and walk around in each town. There’s lots to see!
Antique Alley is known for growing larger each year so if you attend one event, its expected that you will find something new the next time. Driving around and checking out the scenery is half the fun of the trip. During April, you will see the wildflowers out in the fields, which you can’t help but admire. Antique Alley it makes for a great day.
I apologize for not having more pictures of the actual sales. Feel free to post comments / pictures if you attend!
