World’s Littlest Skyscraper & The Artifact Emporium 2012-01-07

One of my gifts for Christmas was this book called “Oddball Texas”. I think the title is self explanatory however in case you are wondering it is just an entire book of strange places to visit in Texas. It was a good gift for a person such as myself.
So here we were driving to Wichita Falls having no idea what we were looking for when I remembered how I had grabbed this book on the way out the door. The only destination for Wichita Falls was the World’s Littlest Skyscraper – so that was where we were going!
So the story goes…
Back in 1918, J.D. McMahon made plans to build the skyscraper in Wichita Falls and paraded his idea around the wealthier folks in town looking for funds to make his plan happen. Blueprints were provided, clearly showing the building as being 480″ tall. No one noticed that it showed inches instead of feet. According to the blueprints, this building would only be 40 feet tall rather than 480 feet tall.
McMahon went thru with construction leaving the building to be four stories tall, each floor only 8’x12′. Only the first level was accessible as there were no stairs. The building was now dubbed the World’s Littlest Skyscraper. Shortly after, McMahon left town with the remaining investors balance in tow.
The building now includes stairs and you can really tell how small the space is inside the building.
During the depression, this building housed families.
Apparently, this location is more popular than we thought. The skyscraper receives tons of visits, we even ran into a couple that stopped to check it out while we were there!
Connected to the World’s Smallest Skyscraper is the Artifact Emporium.
This place was incredibly interesting and the manager who was working was gracious enough to tell us about the store, and the history of the building and the skyscraper.
Outside the building, you will find this plaque however if you search on the National Registry of Historic Places, this building is not listed.
This is what the shop looks like as soon as you enter the building.
I mean look at the stuff in this place. They have a little bit of everything. I really mean everything.
In this main room you will find jewelry, monkey’s, a dice clock, longhorns, toys, clocks and furniture. There was even a lounge chair in the men’s restroom. I couldn’t believe either.
In the room to the right, it’s more of a “man’s room” and the room to the left is more along the lines of a “ladies” taste (furniture, household and kitchen items). Most of the artifacts in this store is more mid-1900’s.
The owner of the shop, travels around checking out estate sales and anything he can find along the way really. Have you seen “American Pickers” on TV? This is pretty much the same thing. I would love it if I knew what I was looking for.
Some of the items in the main room.
The monkey’s kind of made me nervous but not as much as the Raggedy Ann dolls in the next room.
I wish I could fit into this little peddle cart. I would have Sy take me for rides! Wheee!
This is a kitchen set from the 1950’s I believe that is made by Lionel, the same company as the train sets.
Believe it or not, this little stove works just as perfect as a normal stove in our homes except it is for children. The oven will heat up to 500 degrees and the burners work. Quite the difference when it comes to children’s kitchen sets today. If you are interested, it is for sale for $1,600.00.
These are a few items from the “man’s room”.
Children’s toys, golf clubs / sets, old cameras, uniforms, war and sports memorabilia.
You name it, you could probably find it in this room.
If you happen to notice the jacket in the top row to the right, is German.
My souvenir for the day, the two broaches seen below.
Love them!
If you are even in the Wichita Falls area, swing on over and check out the World’s Littlest Skyscraper and the Artifact Emporium. Hopefully, the same manager will be working and will be able to tell you all the details of the old building as well as some of the history of the items inside the store.
This place really just made the trip. Thank you!

Lone Star Classic Chevy Convention, Irving, TX 2011-05-28

When my parents told me they were coming to visit me in Texas, my dad made sure to tell me that I also had a mission – find an old car show. He is a huge antique enthusiast, so it’s really no wonder. Thank goodness I found one, I haven’t had a lot of luck in the past finding these around here.

The Lone Star Classic Chevy Convention presided over Memorial Day in Irving, Texas at the Sheraton Hotel. This convention features cars from 1955-1957 from across the country. The mid-50’s provided cheap, available and great looking cars. Nowadays, Chevy’s are built and restored to compete at these conventions which can bring more restoration value to their vehicles.

The Lone Star Chevy Convention originally began to provide local Texas enthusiasts with an annual event  that would be held by a “local chapter” in the early ’80’s. Obviously, it’s become successful. Check out some of these rides.

The Conventions included a drag race, peel out contest, Show and Shine judging, Candi Clark from ‘American Graffiti’ and live entertainment from a local radio station (providing prizes). We happened to be walking by their table when they asked a multiple choice question, one of the answers being ‘Vermont’. If any of us knew the answer, it would be dad. He quickly yelled out ‘Vermont’ (really who else was going to yell it out) and sure enough he was right! Must have been meant to be!

Someday I will own a truck like this.
It’s about the details.

Antique Alley, Texas

Every year in April and September, rain or shine, you can travel along Farm Road 4 between Maypearl, Grandview and Cleburne you can expect nothing but sales. That’s right – its a 25 mile stretch full of steals and deals!

If you love pondering through items, what some may consider junk you consider gold, this is going to be the trip for you. This area is full of Texans who have been living in this area for generations, including many farmers and ranchers. Coming across some great antiques would not be a surprise so be sure to get out there bright and early!

I would suggest starting off in either Cleburne or Maypearl and head towards the other. Last year we decided to give this much talked about event a try. Half the fun is checking out the scenery along Farm Road 4 – its gorgeous! (Be sure to bring your camera!) You will want to park and walk around in each town. There’s lots to see!

We started off in Maypearl, a tiny little Texas town that I fell in love with the minute we got there. Love, love, love! The “Main Street” was lined with individuals, families and businesses with miscellaneous items to sell from antiques, to dishware, to yard items. We also ran into a few fund raising groups selling baked items and of course Girl Scout cookies (makes it hard to say no).
Soon enough you will find yourself heading west towards Grandview. Another small town, however slightly larger than Maypearl. Here we found a few shops open, typical “Texas” and antique shops. Again, the street lined with small tents. We found some baked goods – pies, breads, cookies and cakes.
The last stop is Cleburne, the largest of the three towns. There will be a ton to look thru. Don’t be surprised that along the way you will run into tons of other stops. Families will be having lawn sales. Between Grandview and Cleburne there will be a large and very busy flea market area. You’ll know you are getting close when the traffic starts to pile up. Don’t be alarmed, you can either park and check it out or keep on trucking thru. The area is pretty large so if you are after treasure hunting, I’d suggest stopping. We didn’t stop to check this out but if you do – let me know how it is! I’m sure there is gold to be found in this area.
Don’t be surprised to run into some traffic along the way – you aren’t the only one out there looking for items or just perusing. It’s almost like a treasure hunt! The culture you come across along the way in incredible – straight up Texas! If you find your stomach growling from hunger – no worries there is everything from BBQ (we are in Texas afterall) to sausage on a stick. You won’t go hungry around these parts!

Antique Alley is known for growing larger each year so if you attend one event, its expected that you will find something new the next time. Driving around and checking out the scenery is half the fun of the trip. During April, you will see the wildflowers out in the fields, which you can’t help but admire. Antique Alley it makes for a great day.

I apologize for not having more pictures of the actual sales. Feel free to post comments / pictures if you attend!
