251 Club – Vermont

Well it’s around the time of year where we are all starting to get cabin fever and ready to get out of the house and enjoy some warmer weather no matter where you are. I’ve also been talking quite a bit about Texas so lets move to a different location. We’re headed to Vermont and the 251 Club!

What is the 251 club? Vermont has 246 “organized” towns as well as five “unorganized” towns in the state (even though there are technically more, believe me I found more…) according to Dr. Arthur W. Peach, the former Director of the Vermont Historical Society. The point of the 251 Club is to travel to each town in the state and have your picture taken next to a landmark in the town (library, post office, city limits sign in some cases) to prove that you have been there (no photoshop allowed). For those of you who know me – its not at all surprising that I would attempt this feat.

I somehow came across the 251 Club in 2007 and then suckered a couple of friends to join me (this is also a very typical thing of me to do). Thank you for being such good sports. We had a good time and there’s lot to see along the way. The great thing about Vermont is that each town is different, it’s small and it’s unique.

For starters you will see a lot of things along the way that you wouldn’t guess you would see…
This was the gate to someone’s driveway on the very top of a mountain around Waltham, I could’ve sat at the top of this mountain and looked at the view for hours (if it wasn’t for the mud on the road).
This was on a back country road (no kidding)…I’d like to see what this sign says now…

You will come across historical markers… John Deere started in Middlebury – did ya know?…
You’ll find yourself stopping along the side of the road praying not to get hit by a car laughing so hard at how out of place you must look…
or in the middle of town doing silly poses. (Live a little!)…
And you will end up in front of the State Capital in Montpelier (it is beautiful)….
You WILL find yourself literally in the middle of nowhere, on a back country road, dead end roads, mountain tops, standing on guardrails because you are to short to get into the picture with the sign, etc..
(I could add a ton of pictures here, but I think you get my point).
You’ll have the opportunity to experience some of Vermont’s greatest treasures, stopping at sugarhouses to taste some fresh Vermont Made Syrup, checking out one of many Vermont breweries and always enjoying the scenery along the way. Vermont holds so much history – there is something for everyone. There’s no place like it.

This is a great thing to do on weekends, days off, by yourself or with your family and friends any time of the year and its cheap. I mean all you have to do is pay for gas and make sure to stop at some Country Stores on your way (there’s always something tasty in there)! Someday I’ll be back to finish my trip! Just make sure you get started on yours! And don’t forget your camera!

Ree Drummond Book Signing, 2/14/2011, Dallas, TX

On Valentine’s Day I found myself sitting in (a very long) line waiting to meet Ree Drummond. She is the creator of PioneerWoman.com and an accomplished author. There are many reasons that it was a very long line. Have you checked out her website? If you haven’t, you definitely should.

Ree Drummond found herself dreaming of living in the city. She had spent some time in Southern California going to college. She went back home to Oklahoma for a short stint before planning to move to Chicago however her plans detoured when she met her future husband, Marlboro Man. (He’s a cowboy.) In 2006, she started her Pioneer Woman blog which is about an accidental country wife and mother for four children. She is an accomplished author (New York Times Best Seller), cook, and photographer. (She is pretty much living my dream life.)

I first came across The Pioneer Woman when I received her cookbook “The Pioneer Woman Cooks: Recipes from an Accidental Country Girl” as a Christmas gift. I was hooked. This is a recipe book which also showcases her photography and family on her Oklahoma ranch. This recipe book is a little different than the normal recipe book. Each recipe shows step by step photographs of the meal you are creating. This is especially helpful. The recipes are also fairly easy to make, they don’t require a ton of ingredients (don’t you hate those recipes where there’s 25 different ingredients listed? This isn’t it.), and they are darn tasty. Besides the fact that she lived on a ranch, was married to a cowboy and looked to have a pretty successful thing going on, I had to know more, so I looked up her website.

Her website is a compilation of her “Confession”, Cooking, Photography, Homeschooling and “Home and Garden”. Her “Confessions” page is stories of her life on the ranch. Her site also includes her photography (which is outstanding) and helpful tips to achieve the photography success you are looking for personally. Ree provides home and gardening tips, they did a home renovation a few years ago and she shares every step of that with you. She and her husband (did I mention that he is a cowboy and they live on a ranch) home school their four children. The homeschooling section (which is run by herself and another contributor) answers questions that people may have and show you the everyday life of being a home schooled kid. The cooking section of her site is her main focus as she loves to cook. This area provides some of her personal recipes and also brings you to a sister site called “Tasty Kitchen”. Here you have access to a ton of recipes which have been submitted by cooks from near and far. Her humor makes you feel as if she’s a friend that you’ve known forever. Her site is inviting and warm and is really a great learning experience. She also has three contributors on her site so you will always be getting an update in one area or another.

Her second book (which is the one that I attended the book signing for) is titled “The Pioneer Woman: Black Heels to Tractor Wheels“. This book is her story of how she and her cowboy husband ‘Marlboro Man’ met – you’ll fall in love with him by the end of chapter 2 – I guarantee it. She has humor and wit and doesn’t hold back when she shares some embarrassing stories (pretty much sounds like things that would happen to me). If you are into great love stories – pick this one up.

Ree Drummond has won numerous awards and is currently nominated for some of the world’s best blogs. She was also featured on “Throwdown with Bobby Flay“. At the book signing she said that she has been approached for starting a show on the Food Network however it sounds like she is more focused on her family and life on the ranch. They were also approached regarding putting out a movie about her book “The Pioneer Woman: Black Heels to Tractor Wheels” so who knows – they have three years to put it out there.

Her website has so much to offer, she appeals to so many people. Check out her site, go buy her book, you won’t be disappointed.

Martina McBride, 2/19/11, Resistol Arena, Mesquite TX

Last night I had the opportunity to attend a fundraising event for the Mesquite ISD in Mesquite, TX.  The event was great and seemed to be a success.

The evening started out with a galla event auctioning off various items. I wasn’t going to be found down there bidding on items that frankly I can’t afford (although I really wish I could… well don’t we all) but I could be found in a suite upstairs. Resistol Arena is one of my favorite places to go – well they have rodeos there so how would I not love it.

Martina McBride came out and sang a heck of a show. Man she’s got pipes! It kind of amazed me. Don’t get me wrong, I grew up listening to her music (“Independence Day”, “Wild Angels”) but sometimes these artists are so in their prime and then the radio starts to focus more on the “new”, “new country” artists you don’t hear so much about them anymore, only their latest hits and you kind of forget about their hits in the past. Martina McBride did an overwhelming job of reminding me of this and bringing it all back. Did I mention she has a set of pipes?

The show lasted probably an hour and a half. She was humble, kind, and man that lady can sing and carry a note from here to the moon. She sang some a lot of her hits (besides the two stated above) “Love’s the Only House”, “When God Fearin’ Women Get the Blues”, “Valentine”, “Wrong Baby Wrong Baby Wrong”, “This One’s for the Girls” and ended the show with “Hit Me With Your Best Shot”. She also brought back two classic country tunes from her “Timeless” album, including a Ray Price number. She has an amazing career.

You can’t help but feel a little star struck when you are listening to an artist that has accomplished while sitting in an intimate venue. Just last Sunday she was seen signing on the Grammy’s with Jennifer Hudson, Christina Aguilera, Yolanda Adams and Florence Welch and this morning we watched her sing the National Anthem at the Daytona 500. Here I was thinking to myself… ‘Yea – we just saw her perform a little over 12 hours ago?!’ Kind of crazy.

If you enjoy country music (not just the current pop / Texas country) you will enjoy her show. She brings you back to the country that you remember a few years ago and even brings in the classic country that makes you remember why you love country so much – its the roots of the music. She has after all been a rock in country music for the past 17 years. She will make you sing, dance and sit back with the one you love and really appreciate life (and wish you had a set of choppers like she does).
