Being Thankful, Week 1

I know a lot of people do these everyday and even though I do have a lot to be thankful for, I figured why not throw it all into a post a week?!

Week 1:

I’m thankful that it’s the holiday season. It’s really the best time of the year. I left work the other day singing Christmas tunes and it was only November 1st, actually I think it may have still been October. I love it.

I’m thankful for Texas weather – oh the fall is an awesome time to be living in Texas. The temperature cools down. There is a slight breeze in the air. Makes you want to take those long walks all day long and just enjoy being outside. I love it, I love  it, I love it.

I’m thankful for being able to travel and experience different places and things I get to visit. And I’m thankful that I have this medium to be able to share everyone who reads this blog and hopefully encourage or inspire someone to do the same. Break out of your shell and try something new!

I’m really thankful for my vehicle. She’s a trooper. She is 15 years old in her old lady blue and still kicking it. I love that car. She may have a little rust and wear and tear but she’s been a ways with me. Senior year of college, graduations, driving to the mountain to snowboard, singing in the car when no one is around, moving from Vermont to Texas, my trips! I wish I could make her last forever. Hopefully she’s still got another year in her (at least)!

I’m thankful for weddings. I love them. I mean I really, really LOVE them. They bring together the closest friends and family of a couple (some who you haven’t seen in some time) to celebrate them and the bond that they have created. It’s special to see and be apart of so much love in one room and share a day that people will remember for the rest of their lives. It also gives you a reason to dance! (By the way – Congratulations to the most recent weddings – Bethanye and Matt (11-05) and Amy and Michael (10-02).)

I am thankful for good friends. Friends where if you happen to not speak to them for a while (because you are thousands of miles apart) or just busy that when you do meet up, you pick up right where you left off. No one skipped a step. Friend’s where if you need anything, they will just drop what they’re doing and help out. Friend who you are lucky enough to have known since you were five and still have the privilege of calling them a friend and friend’s that you have known only a short period of time but they feel like sisters and brothers. It’s wicked special and a surely a blessing.

Have a good week!

Halloween 2011

For Halloween this year, I went Trick or Treating with Sy’s niece and nephew.
Trick or treating is very, very different in the DFW area than where I grew up.
Here, it’s like the movies – you just walk out the front door and go to the neighbors in your neighborhood. The street is lined with homes and you don’t have to put on your winter coat!
Back home in Vermont, I lived out in the country and it seemed like every Halloween we would get our first snowfall. This meant, costume on, winter coat over the costume. Our neighbors were not close at all. We would have to drive from neighbor to neighbor and only to where we knew the homeowners. Once we were done Trick or Treating, we would go to the Elementary school (the only school in our town) where they would have games in the gym for the kids and a Haunted Forest. I wonder if that still goes on…
Texas = much different.
So, here I was walking with Sy’s niece, nephew and his mom going house to house and we came to one home where a group of people were standing outside handing out items.
This particular home ran out of candy but kept giving.
They hadn’t run out of booze either.
Sy’s nephew received 38 cents (way to hit up a house that’s giving out money) and his niece – she got something super special.
The man told her that he was giving her a special coin. A very, very luck coin that was just for her!
She was to hold onto it forever for good luck.
The coin:
A $1 token from the Lady Luck Casino in Quad Cities, Iowa.
Way to make a steal!

Brutus

We went for a little drive last weekend and came across this ranch in Arlington / Mansfield area.
Beautiful longhorns, they were gorgeous.
Meet, ah we’ll call him Brutus.
He was the friendliest one and I mean that with complete sarcasm.
These are his roommates.
LeRoy and Jethro.
Their horns are massive!
They are ring toss champions.
When we initially pulled over to take some pictures, they were a little ways away from the road, grazing.
Soon enough, good ole Brutus was coming over for a visit.
He would take a couple steps, stop, kick his front leg back a couple time, shake his head back and forth and do the entire rotation over again.
Behind me, I would hear “You should back away from the fence.”
I wasn’t afraid of Brutus, or the others (I do respect them). The fence was between us (although I’m sure he could find a way to get his horns thru the fence. He was just marking his territory and making it known – He was the boss, is the boss and will always be the boss.
He is some kind of gorgeous though!
LeRoy and Jethro were just staying back, eating and laying low. They’re a little more laid back.
Check out these other two in the corner, duking it out!
Bye Bye Brutus! Thanks for the visit!
