Mission: Snowcone – Bedford Snoball

So back home in Vermont, creemee’s are the thing. It’s soft serve ice cream for those who don’t know. In Texas, it gets WAY too hot to even think about putting some ice cream on a cone and expecting to eat the entire thing before it melts. Thus – Texas has snowcones.
Snowcones come in every size, every flavor and even has “extras”. You can get ice cream at the bottom of the snow cone, sprinkles, whip cream or even, my personal favorite, cream. There is one huge issue – it’s all about the “snow”. Yes, how the ice is shaved is extremely important! It can’t be too hard or icy, the flavoring needs to seep into the shaved ice enough so the ice seems flavored, not coated but not too much so it turns into a syrupy drink. As much as the heat sometimes gets me (and I’m not going to complain because this summer isn’t nearly a bad as last summer), I’ve given myself a new mission for the summer. Let’s find the best snowcone in North Texas!

Last night’s stop: Bedford Snoball
Due to the line of cars at the drive thru and the line of people at the window, I thought this might be a good stop.
Finding a flavor that tickles your fancy shouldn’t be an issue here – there’s a ton! The prices aren’t bad either!
Here she be – Strawberry Shortcake (medium).
Ingredients: “Strawberry Jubilee” flavoring (which is actually made with real strawberries), cream and whip cream on top.
To me, it tasted more like a strawberry daiquiri than strawberry shortcake but I’m not going to complain. It was still pretty darn good. Real strawberries! Love it! The whip cream was a little questionable to me but mixed in with the snowcone, it was creamy and delicious!
Bedford Snoball gets a Pass! I’m pretty sure I’ll be back (probably to try the Raspberry Creamcicle)!
Check them out! Let me know your flavor of choice and what you thought!
If you know of a great snowcone stand in the DFW area – please let me know! I’ll try to check it out!

Sights – Fort Walton Beach, Florida

How could you not like this view?
We stayed at the Ramada Resort and one night I just happen to walk out onto our balcony and there’s a movie going on! What a fantastic idea. I proceeded to watch it (backwards) from our balcony. Best thing ever!
In between Ft. Walton Beach and Destin – you hit the dunes!
Then there’s Destin. Don’t mind the side of the highway in the pictures. A couple years ago I left this cove absolutely frightened because I was headed parasailing and came back just wanting to do it again.
Apparently it’s a party if you have a boat. I just want to make my way out to the blow up slide in the middle!
The main event….
Congrats C&C!
These were the centerpieces. Yes, they were real. Operation Save the Goldfish!

Dewey Destin, Destin, FL

Sy and I have travelled to the Destin, Florida area three times in the last four years. It is beautiful, relaxing – quite frankly it’s paradise. One spot that we’ve checked out while we’re there is Dewey Destin.

Dewey Destin isn’t on the main strip of the island. Frankly, to me it feels like it’s tucked away within the cove. If you are coming into Destin from the West on highway 98, you’ll go over the huge bridge coming into Destin – take the first left (Calhoun Ave). You’ll see a sign on your left. If you’d rather take your boat, that’s possible too. There’s a dock. As tucked away as it is, don’t be surprised when you pull up and the parking lot is full. This is quite a popular place.

This is Dewey Destin. One little building attached to a building on a dock. Yes, you eat on the water.

I’m not going to lie. It’s a little tight quarters when you go in to order. You can order a meal for lunch or dinner or you can get fresh seafood to bring home and cook yourself. Once you order, take a seat and you’re food will be brought out. The seating is appropriate enough – picnic tables with openness to view out at the adjointing dock. A couple years ago when we were here, there were dolphins swimming nearby (my favorite). I think that’s why we keep going back to be honest – I LOVE seeing the dolphins. No dolphins this year though.

Sy ordered the fried oyster basket which came with coleslaw and fries. The meal was $17 which we found to be a little overpriced for the amount of food.

I ordered the shrimp salad sandwich. The shrimp salad was loaded with shrimp and placed on a hamburger bun. The sandwich was good.

For me, Dewey Desin is about the atmosphere. I love being near the water, enjoying the view and hoping that I’m lucky enough to see a dolphin or two. It’s also very convenient if you’re already on the water.
If you are in the area, try it out and let me know what you had and what you think!
